Renaissance District

Renaissance District Building the Midwest's largest mixed-use technology campus through the adaptive reuse of 1.3 million sq ft of historic Studebaker property.

The Renaissance District is located on the southern edge of downtown South Bend, Indiana. At the heart of the district is a core of technology businesses located in Union Station Technology Center and expanding into Studebaker manufacturing buildings (opening summer 2016.) The district features over 88 businesses including Four Winds Field, home of the South Bend Cubs. Redevelopment plans for the

Studebaker properties include housing, entrepreneur data incubator, shopping, dining, and educational facilities. We are building the ecosystem needed to support companies, entrepreneurs, and innovators who desire to fast track their ideas through the use
of technology.

Built in 1928, the Studebaker Guard House sat on the south side of Sample Street between the machine shop and the engineering building. The guards stationed in the shack would check employee identification badges; they also retained control of the Sample Street stoplight so that trucks containing Studebaker materials could come and go from the plant.
When the Studebaker factory was demolished in 2008, it was decided by John Oxian of the Historic Preservation Commission and Ann Kolata of South Bend’s department of Community Investment that the 122 sq. ft. guard house would be carefully disassembled and preserved. The gates, brick columns, and limestone finial spheres have been stored at Studebaker Buildings 113 and 84 with a promise from the City of South Bend to one day be rebuilt.
In order to restore the historic Guard House, we need your assistance. A group of Studebaker enthusiasts is leading the effort to reconstruct the Guard House. Its new home will lie near the southeast corner of Studebaker Building 113 on Lafayette Boulevard, inside the Renaissance District -- the 80-block radius where the Studebaker complex was located. This District is working to redefine South Bend as it is being developed into a multi-use Technology campus.
Future generations will be housed within the very walls that Studebaker built to facilitate their innovation. Repurposing the facility honors the legacy and innovation that began there in the 1800s. Restoring the Guard House will honor the thousands of men and women who filed past over the years -- a lasting legacy to the new occupants of the enduring innovative spirit of Studebaker. Please see the facing page for the many ways you can help make this happen!
