Like a lot of people around the world this week, I’m feeling down over the loss of Wendell Berry, but I remain grateful that he left behind a legacy of good work and kindness and advocacy that his family will continue. I like to be able to say I share a hometown with Mr. Berry (Port Royal, KY), and while I still live nearby, I only had the opportunity to meet him and speak to him a handful of times. I have, however, had the good fortune to strike up a friendship with his granddaughter, Virginia, and her husband Ben. It’s through that friendship that I gained the opportunity to draw what would eventually become the logo for The Bookstore at The Berry Center. That logo holds a lot of meaning and significance for me, and so I thought I’d share something about it that others mourning and celebrating Mr. Berry might appreciate.
While it may be too small to see on most things the logo appears on, if you look closely you will see “W + T” in one of the logs that the cabin is made up of. This, of course, is a nod to Wendell and his wife, the incredible in her own right, Tanya Amyx Berry. Now you can join in on the secret. I hope every time you see that logo now you’ll think of that little tidbit and it’ll bring you a little morsel of joy.
