Have you ever wondered why 911 operators ask so many questions? We understand it can be frustrating during a stressful situation. But the truth is, every piece of information you provide is crucial.

While you're on the phone, our dispatchers are already working behind the scenes to get help on its way. Your answers help them determine the exact type of assistance needed, where to send it, and even how to prepare responders for what they'll face.

It's a complex process, but the goal is simple: to get you the help you need as quickly as possible. So please, be patient with our operators. They’re highly trained professionals dedicated to keeping our community safe.

We’re going to miss you dearly Mark…

It is with a heavy heart, we announce the unexpected passing of our Executive Director, Mark Spross. Mark has been the Director of METCOM since January of 2019. In this time, Mark made a significant contribution to our Dispatch Center and our User Agencies in an indescribable way.

Mark made a concerted effort from the day he walked in to METCOM, until the last day he walked out. He would continuously check in with the employees, just to see if they needed anything, almost to an annoying level. He knew this, but wasn’t going to change because he cared deeply for his staff and the well-being of them and their families. Mark was not a morning person, far from it, but he made it a habit to come in to work very often before the night shift went home, just to check in with them and have conversations.

On an even larger level, Mark filled several roles with the Oregon State Chapter of APCO and most recently, held the position of Second Vice President of the National APCO executive board. Mark’s drive and determination was obvious and his intent was always to make things better, not only for his own Agency but for that of the Emergency Telecommunications Community across the entire country and beyond.

Mark will be missed well beyond words can describe. Not only by METCOM, but by so many friends and countless acquaintances and friends made throughout the 911 industry.
We would like to thank those who have already reached out to provide support and kind words, as we navigate through the loss of our leader, co-worker and friend.
We would like to extend our deepest sympathies to Mark’s family and many, many friends, and the entire 911 community.
