How do you maintain consistent processes as an organization grows and takes on increasingly complex work?

For IBSS, CMMI has provided a framework for strengthening development and service delivery processes while supporting a culture of continuous improvement.

IBSS achieved CMMI-DEV Maturity Level 3 in 2023 and CMMI-SVC Maturity Level 3 in 2019. But the value goes beyond the appraisal itself. The process gave our teams an opportunity to examine how work is performed, identify opportunities for greater consistency, and strengthen the foundation supporting our customers.

In our latest case study, we take a closer look at the challenge, approach, results, and what comes next for IBSS:

IBSS achieved CMMI-DEV and CMMI-SVC Maturity Level 3, strengthening consistent processes and supporting continuous improvement across the organization.

October is National Seafood Month, a time to recognize the seafood industry and the science, people, and resources behind it.

We have decades of fisheries data, ocean observations, scientific assessments, and resource management that help us better understand the marine ecosystems that support seafood.

Our latest article looks at National Seafood Month by the numbers, including seafood consumption, commercial and recreational fishing, economic impacts, and the role science plays in the future of our oceans.

Take a look:

That’s a wrap on PMDP’s 2026 marine debris cleanup operations.

After another season in Papahānaumokuākea, the team has completed cleanup operations with 103,000 pounds of marine debris now onboard, including 56,000 pounds loaded onto the ship on the final day.

As the crew heads home, we’re grateful to everyone who made this season possible. Mahalo to everyone who followed along with this year’s mission.

Here’s to another successful season of protecting Papahānaumokuākea. 💙

Cybersecurity isn’t only the responsibility of the IT or security team.

Every employee plays a role in protecting an organization’s systems, information, and people. Small decisions, like pausing before clicking a link, using MFA, keeping software updated, or reporting something suspicious, can help reduce risk.

For Cybersecurity Awareness Month, we’re highlighting a few simple ways employees can make cybersecurity part of their everyday routine.

What would happen if we lost our weather satellites?

We’d still have weather stations, radar, aircraft, balloons, and forecasting models. But we’d lose one of the most important ways we observe the atmosphere across large and often difficult-to-reach areas of Earth.

Our latest article explores what we would lose, how satellite data supports forecasting, and what the impact could be on severe weather monitoring.

Another big day for the Papahānaumokuākea Marine Debris Project. The team recovered 4,540 pounds of marine debris before lunch, bringing the mission total to an even 47,000 pounds.

With cleanup at Manawai complete, the crew is now headed to Kuaihelani (Midway Atoll), where approximately 56,000 more pounds of marine debris collected earlier this year are waiting to be loaded.

This mission has also been a full-circle experience for team member Jeff Milisen. Seventeen years ago, Jeff joined NOAA’s Marine Debris Project as a recent graduate and helped remove 84 tons of debris from Papahānaumokuākea. Today, he’s back with his wife, Sarah, who was also shaped by her experience with the project.

After nearly two decades, Jeff says the difference is clear: years of cleanup efforts have transformed the landscape, with the team now much closer to staying ahead of new debris coming into the region.

The work continues! (Photos provided by PMDP)
