Trying a new app or streaming service? Before you tap “start free trial,” check when the paid subscription begins and what it will cost. Set a calendar reminder a couple of days before renewal so you can decide whether it’s worth keeping. A trial should help you try something—not surprise you with a charge.

A stolen password shouldn’t be all it takes to get into your account. Turn on two-step verification wherever it’s offered, especially for email and banking. A browser pop-up claiming your computer is infected can look convincing—especially when it tells you to call “support” right away. Don’t call the number, install software, or give a stranger remote access to your device. Close the tab or browser; if it won’t close, use your device’s task manager or force-quit option. If you’re concerned, open your trusted security software directly instead of following the pop-up.
