Well, this is a new one for our ShelbyFiber team ...

We often talk about how our new fiber network has fewer outages than older internet technologies. It turns out fiber can handle almost anything—except a direct hit from a shotgun.

We had to deploy our repair crew after a stray bullet severed our fiber line yesterday (and yep, the spent shotgun shell was found right there in the ditch).

We aren't sure if someone was aiming for a bird or just practicing their shot, but those tiny pellets completely shattered the fiber strands inside.

Shooting near utility poles is dangerous and can knock out critical internet, phone, power, and emergency services for hundreds of your neighbors.

Service was fully restored as a temporary patch was applied. There will be a permanent repair done next week. When this permanent repair takes place on Tuesday, Sept. 8, around mid-morning, there will be an outage to some of our ShelbyFiber customers.

How you can help keep our community connected:

Look before you shoot: If you are hunting or practicing, please be mindful of your surroundings and avoid shooting near or toward utility lines.

Report damage: If you ever see someone shooting near the lines or notice damaged infrastructure, please let us know immediately.

We are taking this situation seriously, so if anyone has any information about this incident from yesterday, September 3. Please reach out and let us know 217-774-2323!

Shelby Electric Cooperative members who receive their power from the Elwin and Moweaqua substations, you can now get future proof internet from ShelbyFiber. Call 217-774-2323 to get on the installation schedule TODAY! Current PWR-net customers, we will upgrade you to ShelbyFiber with no installation fee.

ShelbyFiber will be opening up two more substations very soon. Please go to www.shelbyfiber.coop and fill out the start new service form to get on the schedule. You can also check out the ShelbyFiber construction phases to learn more about what is going on in your area.

Employee Spotlight:

Please join us in giving a warm welcome to ShelbyFiber's newest Broadband Member Engagement Specialist, Bridgette Lockhart! Bridgette is a lifelong Shelbyville resident and a 2011 graduate of Shelbyville High School. She holds an Associate’s Degree in Human Services - Criminal Justice from Lake Land College.

Before joining our team, Bridgette served as the LIHEAP Program Manager at CEFS Economic Opportunity Corporation. Her background in helping others makes her a perfect fit! Bridgette found out about our job opening right here on Facebook.

She was drawn to the cooperative for the great work-life balance and the opportunity to serve the community she loves, right close to home. "I am really looking forward to collaborating with the team, obtaining new knowledge and working with our members," Bridgette says.

When she isn't helping our members, Bridgette loves walking trails, exploring new places, and spending quality time with her husband Devin, their two kids (Wyatt, 11, and Evelyn, 7), and their two cats, Smokey and Raya.

We are thrilled to have her on the ShelbyFiber team. Welcome, Bridgette!
