The new standard in policing:

Inexperienced officers teaching other inexperienced officers how to survive the streets.

FTOs with barely any real street time training rookies who have zero experience.
The blind leading the blind.

This is what happens when departments lower standards to fill seats and rush people through training.

The streets don’t care about your academy certificates or how many PowerPoints you sat through. They’re dangerous, unpredictable, and unforgiving.

We need experienced, battle-tested officers mentoring the next generation — not rookies teaching rookies.

Lowering the bar doesn’t make the job easier. It makes it deadlier for everyone.

Some of the best leaders in law enforcement have never held formal rank.

Stars, bars, and stripes don’t automatically equate to influence or leadership.

Some of the best leaders have never been chiefs, captains, sergeants, or anything alike.

They were the officers people trusted and respected. Officers who were dependable and shaped the culture through their attitude and behavior.

This is the informal leader.

Leadership isn’t pinned to your collar.

Leadership rests on a foundation of competency, with pillars of trust and respect supporting everything above it.

It’s something you demonstrate every day, rank or no rank.

I’m excited to share a look at my upcoming book:

Invisible Stripes: Leadership Without Rank

Some leaders wear invisible stripes.

The reviews are rolling in, and readers are connecting with Blues of Betrayal in exactly the way it was intended—through atmosphere, loyalty, loss, and the quiet emotional weight carried between the lines.

People aren’t just reading the story… they’re feeling it.

If you enjoy character-driven noir, slow-burn tension, and stories where the emotional impact lingers after the final page, now’s the time to step into Queens Hill.

Don’t be the last one at the bar when the lights go dim.

Blues of Betrayal
Every oath has a cost.

Policing principles don’t transfer seamlessly into every environment.

Healthcare facilities are their own ecosystem—clinical priorities, vulnerable populations, privacy laws, emotional volatility, restricted spaces, and nonstop operational pressure.

The tactics, communication style, and decision-making that work on the street don’t automatically translate to healthcare.

That’s why specialized training matters.

The North Carolina Law Enforcement Officers’ Guidebook to Policing in Healthcare was written to help officers, leaders, and organizations understand that reality—and operate with greater clarity, professionalism, and reduced liability.

Because assigning someone there without preparation isn’t staffing.

It’s gambling.

One of the best compliments I’ve received about Blues of Betrayal is that readers thought they had it solved—only to realize the real story was unfolding underneath the one they thought they were watching.

And the ending? More than one reader called it a gut punch.

To me, that’s noir at its best.

A few of my favorite and most influential characters have always been Harry Bosch, Jesse Stone, and Raylan Givens—the kind of men whose cases reveal just as much about the people carrying them as the crimes themselves.

The fact that readers connected with the slow reveal and the emotional weight of the ending means a great deal to me.

The sequel is coming soon, and Frankie Merlot is just getting started.

Training officers is a necessity.
Training officers to operate in specialized environments is nonnegotiable.

Failing to prepare officers is one of the many forms of inexcusable negligence that agencies still underestimate.

The real problem is rarely the incident itself.
The incident is the symptom.
The training gap is the cause.

City of Canton v. Harris made the standard clear: failure to train becomes liability when it reflects deliberate indifference to the rights of those officers encounter.

No agency wants to find itself defending the preventable.

Training is not optional.
It is liability prevention.
