A recent visit with one of my customers, who is 101 years old, got me thinking about the Thanksgiving technology checklist I’ve been sharing for the past few years.

I was checking his backup and discovered that the aging backup drive had failed. We’re getting it replaced, but it was a good reminder: having a backup isn’t enough—you need to check that it’s working!

I’m also regularly helping older customers who have been scammed or tricked into giving someone remote access to their computers. These conversations shouldn’t wait until the holidays.

So I went through the post and updated it with newer information about backups, account security, phone-number protection, and helping parents and grandparents protect their digital lives. It also includes a collection of related videos.

Rather than waiting until Thanksgiving to share it again, I’m posting the updated version now. Take a few minutes to read it, share it with your family, and check in with someone who could use a hand.

Hi there! It’s Dana from MacMedics. You might know me as “the tall guy in the baseball cap.” There’s a reason for that cap—I’m legally blind, and overhead lighting makes it much harder for me to see. The brim helps!

I have retinitis pigmentosa, a genetic condition that affects my peripheral vision, leaving me with tunnel vision. I also have swelling in my eyes and significant double vision. If I’ve helped you in the store, you’ve probably seen me putting on my 3X readers to get a closer look at your computer screen.

Today, October 15, is White Cane Awareness Day. Most customers see me without my cane because I don’t usually use it inside the store. That makes my disability largely invisible. Out in public, though, my cane helps me navigate safely, avoid bumping into people, and get around independently.
