It’s summertime! It’s time to keep your iPhone safe from accidents at the pool. If you’re gonna be swimming, be sure to take your iPhone out of your pocket of your swim trunks and put it with your backpack or pool bag. Not a bad idea to take a Ziploc bag for the summer that way if you get into a dicey situation or getting a free boat ride somewhere, you can drop your phone into a Ziploc bag to give it an extra layer of protection while you’re on the water or near the pool. Also, if you’re traveling this summer, you wanna make sure you’re backing up to iCloud backup which only is a dollar a month to start this backs up your entire phone, including an app data. When you’re traveling, your phone may not magically back up because it usually backs up at home when you’re connected to power the screen is locked and you’re connected to your home Wi-Fi. If you’re traveling this summer, it’s a good idea to force a backup after you’ve created some once in a lifetime memories on your phone get them backed up. You can force a backup over cellular if you’re traveling domestically if you’re traveling internationally as soon as you get back to your hotel or wherever you’re staying, just join Wi-Fi and force a backup. Also, don’t forget if you’re traveling overseas nomad.com is a great service for an in country phone number. That’s less expensive than your carrier with three times the data in most cases. Don’t forget you can share iCloud backup with the rest of your family and make sure they’re backing up as well. Those surfing lessons you took in Tahiti you don’t wanna lose those memories. Back them up as soon as you get back to the hotel. The other customer that I was helping actually was power washing something and didn’t take his phone out of his pocket and it got too wet and it died on them. So if you gonna be doing something fun on the water or at the pool or some work with the power washer or in the rain, you wanna make sure your iPhone is safe that Ziploc bag could be a savior for you.

This is one of the projects I’m working on today: I’m helping a customer move from a 2015 MacBook Pro 15 inch to a new MacBook Neo. The MacBook Neo does not have thunderbolt so I’ll have to do the transfer via time machine. That’s probably the most efficient way to do it.

This one’s a new one for me. I have not thought through the 3-D chess move of potentially having your original photos lost in a compromised iCloud account! If you have a Mac or a PC, you can plug your phone into your computer and run a back up, but in this case that would just be backing up the optimized thumbnails not the original photos. So in this case the only way he would’ve been able to save himself if he was doing what one of my colleagues did and that is to set up an old iMac, where that computer’s mission is just to download all of the photos out of iCloud photos. That way, if something goes wrong or there’s a problem at Apple he would have all of the original photos that he and his entire family had ever taken on an old 2010 iMac. I don’t really know of another way that this gentleman would’ve been able to get his data back from the hacked iCloud account, but that is a danger of using iCloud photos. If your iCloud account gets compromised, you could lose access to your original photos and that could be a big loss. Also, this customer could’ve potentially been helped by having a Screen Time password turned on. You’ve probably heard me talk about that before. There was a really disturbing Wall Street Journal video from a year or two ago where they talked about a woman who was in a bar and they looked over her shoulder and shoulder surf. Her pin code for her phone. They stole her phone. They stole her identity. They stole money out of her bank account and so forth and so on it was really a complete hack and it was very disturbing. She would’ve been helped with the Screen Time password and obviously if you’re an adult you don’t need the phone to remind you when it’s time to go to bed and when you can use your phone and have app limit set, but you can set it so that you cannot make changes to your account a pin for your SIM. If you don’t already have one on AT&T it’s relatively easy. You can do it right on your phone. You can add a SIM pin by using the default code which is 1111 and then change it to a new four digit pin that only you know. .

We successfully fixed this iPhone 17 Pro today. This is the before picture. Not a fan of the racing stripe look and this customer did not have AppleCare so this was a pretty costly repair. Don’t get tricked into buying the carrier insurance through Asurion. You really want AppleCare +! And a fun insider tip is that due to some changes at Apple you can buy a two-year plan of AppleCare+ from MacMedics at a pretty substantial discount. Apple only sells it as monthly and only with the loss and theft, so now it’s either that or AppleCare one which is $20 a month for three devices.
