A hiking partner and I decided to go out for a beach day after few weeks of mostly quarantine. Cabin fever was getting bad for both of us so we had to go out. Julia suggested that we should check out Carolina Beach State Park first and get in a relaxing hike to continue our tradition of biweekly hikes. So glad for that suggestion because I have fond memories of crabbing along the Cape Fear River as a teenager... so I was all for revisiting the area after many years. Turned out to be a great day full of candid, landscape, and wildlife shots! Oh and we got to relax at the beach afterward so that's a plus!

Graveyard of the Atlantic
---------------------------------

Chills went up my spine. I wasn't sure if I was shivering due to the fact I was knee-deep in the cool surf trying to get pictures or the fact I was looking at yet another evidence of a cursed sea. For many centuries, treacherous waters of the Outer Banks sunk several thousand of ships. British and French battleships. Spanish treasure ship. Blackbeard's legendary Queen Anne's Revenge. Civil War ironclad warships. N**i U-boats. And many other ships that are bigger and more powerful than this humble scallop boat. For this reason, the sea off of the Outer Banks earned such a haunting nickname: "Graveyard of the Atlantic".

Over two months ago, on March 1st, crew of a scallop boat called "Ocean Pursuit" found themselves in trouble trying to navigate through the infamous Oregon Inlet. Coast Guard helicopter lifted the crew out of the boat and, eventually, "Ocean Pursuit" found itself running aground shortly later that day. Now it's a popular site for photographers until a salvage company can come in to remove it at cost of millions.

Here in North Carolina, you know you're getting close to the beach when you start seeing swamps full of these beautiful blackwater trees. Cypress trees are some of oldest in the South and they've seen a lot of history dating back to the 17th century founding of Edenton by Jamestown settlers. To me... it's hard to get a more southern landscape shot than this one.

On the shoreline of Albemarle Sound lies a charming southern town of 5,000 people. You'd need to drive through many miles of swamp to get here so it made for a pleasant weekend drive. Since there's nothing else to do with a pandemic going on... and with our beaches way overcrowded... I decided to spend this warm day taking pictures of this charming lighthouse on this tiny town's waterfront. Never came close to anyone else so this was perfect.

Edenton has a lot of history... it was founded by Jamestown settlers in 1658 as North Carolina's first European permanent. It fought off pirates like Blackbeard. It was the site of first known political action by women in the New World in 1774. And, finally, it was the site of a Civil War navy battle with a Confederate ironclad taking on 9 warships of Union to an inconclusive result. And now, like everyone in the country, Edenton is just trying to cope with the COVID-19 pandemic in the year of 2020.

Once every blue moon, I'd go through my hard drives and look for a hidden gem somewhere in my collection of 100,000+ pictures I've taken over last 6 years. Found a nice one of my family's eastern redbud tree in full bloom last April :)

Hope y'all are doing okay with the ongoing pandemic!

Remember how I told y'all that taking candid shots of my friends are some of my favorite things to do with my camera? I got to do more of them while reconnecting with one of my high school friends, Julia. Both of us have been mostly away from the Raleigh area for several years and just moved back home during last year. As result, we've been having few opportunities to catch up with each other after seven years while exploring the area's state parks.

We ended up hiking about four miles around Cliffs of the Neuse River State Park this past Saturday just enjoying the nature around us. I left my hiking buddies behind in the Northeast U.S. so I'm grateful to reconnect my long-time friendship with Julia as one of my local adventure partners going forward.

I've taken pictures of many incredible things. Northern lights... tornadoes... Milky Way galaxy... total solar eclipse... and more. They're all great experiences from my adventures. But you know what? To me, taking pictures of my friends are up there with these moments in term of bringing joy to me as a photographer. I love taking pictures of my friends in their element, whether it's a candid or a posed shot.

I've known Kayla for about 5 years now from our time as meteorology students at UNC Asheville. We labored over countless homework assignments, worked on forecasting tactics in a competition, studied long hours on synoptic equations, and chased tornadoes along with our professor right after our college graduation. We went through a lot and I got to know her really well in the process.

I tried to take advantage of Kayla's personality when we're doing these pictures together. She has an adventurous soul and love to explore new places. She will hop onto the bench in middle of a park or climb up beams of a covered bridge. She also isn't shy to be loud and passionate. Just take her to a coffee shop first and she will absolutely seize the day afterward. Oh and Kayla is absolutely fearless while taking on tornadoes and hurricanes as a storm chaser. She even started a weather media company (MeteoTechWx) along with her dad. She might be the only person with even more passion for all things weather than I do and that's the honest truth.

As always, it's a honor that she trusted me to take pictures of her that's reflective of her colorful personality. This was one of more fun shoots I've ever done and I really look forward to doing more of these with my other friends.

🌟 Looking up to the star 🌟

Last week, right before COVID-19 crisis escalated here, my college friend Kayla and I met up for a morning of photography. After having coffee, we explored around village of Old Salem and took pictures of the area. Kayla, who dyed her hair with blue streaks recently, was eager to try out modeling for me and we had a blast trying out different things around Old Salem! I should be done editing pictures from our shoot later this evening and have them on this page at some point this weekend. Can't wait for y'all to see them!

(NOTE: CANCELED DUE TO ONGOING CORONAVIRUS CRISIS)

Hey y'all! With spring arriving and our flowers getting ready to bloom once again, it's time for me to start booking more portrait sessions with my clients!

Starting in late March and lasting until early May, many of our beautiful flowers will bloom and they could serve as perfect background for your photography needs. I know of several beautiful flowery gardens across the region such as WRAL Azalea Garden, Sarah P. Duke Gardens, North Carolina Botanical Garden, and several other excellent locations!

As always, my usual charge for your photography needs is around $120/hour and completely up for negotiation if you're looking for the right deal. Send me a message to set up an appointment with me :) Last year was a lot of fun having done several flowery shoots for my friends, including the one with my college classmate Kayla in downtown Greensboro last April. Hopefully this upcoming spring will be just as fun!

It's been a couple months since I got to use my camera so I decided to go out to scout spots around Raleigh. I was pleasantly surprised by bloom of daffodils flowers at Dorothea Dix Park so I took few shots from there. Equally fortunate was the appearance of a moonrise directly over buildings of Raleigh to serve as a great background feature. Really looking forward to see what 2020 has in store for my photography!
