A big shift in AI search happened this month, and it did not make many local business headlines.

Reddit's share of ChatGPT citations dropped from 3.8 percent to 0.5 percent in a single week. That is an 86 percent decline, caused partly by OpenAI changing how ChatGPT picks sources, and partly by Reddit blocking its own site from crawlers.

The bigger point for business owners. When your entire AI visibility strategy leans on one platform, one decision from that platform's owner can wipe it out overnight.

Something that changed how we think about AI search visibility.

Only 13.7 percent of URLs cited in AI Overviews also show up in AI Mode for the same query. In practice that means being visible in one AI surface does not carry over to the other.

If your business shows up when someone asks Google AI Overviews, it may still be invisible when the same person switches to AI Mode. Two AI surfaces on the same platform, two very different lists of recommended sources.

Google's third spam update of the year is rolling out this week. Most of the SEO world is focused on that.

Meanwhile, Google is quietly launching Information Agents. These run persistent background searches on a topic for a customer over days or weeks. That means your brand is no longer being judged on a single AI answer. It is being judged on every mention, review, and citation that lands during the entire monitoring window.

For local businesses, that is a real shift. Your reputation across the web keeps grading you, even when the customer is not actively searching.

Something we have been noticing in local business audits. Most owners are winning on Google reviews and losing everywhere else.

A strong Google star rating with 200 reviews is a real asset. Zero reviews on Yelp, Facebook, or industry sites is a real problem. ChatGPT, Apple Maps, and other AI tools quietly pull from those other sources when they recommend businesses.

The uncomfortable version of this question: if a customer asks ChatGPT for a recommendation in your industry, is your business even in the conversation?
