’s new album Forever is out 3.22.2022.

I had the pleasure to work with , Phife’s mother Cheryl and Phife’s wife Diesha over the past year on the cover art, some merch for videos and single art for the upcoming release, a bit of a möbius strip of a time warp since I was asked to design the program for Phife’s memorial service in 2016.

While working on the artwork and listening to rough drafts turn into full Bob Power/Ali Shaheed Muhammad mixed finals over the last several months, it felt like a full circle moment being able to work on a project for a member of one of the most important music groups of my life (yeah, they are family now but it’s important to hold the reverence irreGARTless) that also features contributions from other friends and peers who entered this music thing through some of the the same avenues and at the same time more or less contributing to it as well, from production to verses and more.

i’m talking folks i’ve known for over 20 years in this thang. Folks I’ve also done artwork for. Were inspired by. Am still inspired by. Have friends in common with. Have not so much really kinda friends in common with.

I dunno, has me really reflective of the time I’ve spent in music, who I spent it with, and why I wanted to spend anytime in the midst at all.

A little over 10 years ago, Slum was working on Villa Manifesto. Baatin (pbuh) had just transitioned and T3 was only the remaining member of the original trio carrying the banner. Young RJ had joined the group as an official member and Elzhi hadnt left the group yet.

I was connected with them to do the album art via & for what I wrongly assumed might be their final album as a group. I met up with T3 and Young RJ in in Ann Abor while in town for my homie’s biz school graduation and discussed ideas for what to do. I wanted to get like a Frank 151 style mini book talking about the group’s legacy and influence with interviews and vignettes from as many of the collaborators and peers as we could manage in place of traditional liner notes. We didn’t have enough time to execute all the grand plans in time for the album release, which ended up being an EP because the group hit some internal strife.

The only reflections on Slum I got were from Questlove before we realised the scope was too big for the time we had.

Anyway, here was my version of the Villa Manifesto cover which got refashioned as the EP cover (which I didnt like as much) and ultimately ended up a release party flyer.
