Quote of The Day... June 25, 2021

Do You Find Yourself Getting Distracted All The Time... Me Too !!!

I often find myself working hard on things that aren't really important and neglecting the more important things I should be doing.

I can find myself doing something that FEELS important - but if I was honest with myself - the task wasn't essential.

I wish I knew how to stop myself from getting distracted all the time.

It's like an addiction… only it happens within my mind!

In the morning, I often have trouble focusing on the RIGHT work because it feels like there are so many other things distracting me from what needs to be done.

• Social media notifications
• Emails that need responses
• Calls to return
• A relentless calendar of tasks that will not go away by simply deleting them
• Blah blah blah…

There is also no way for me to predict when other disruptions will pop up.

I've found that there are important tasks and then there are secondary ones.

Stuff that's important consists of those few items which will have a significant impact if they get done or don't get done.

But all too often, I treat secondary tasks as important - and important tasks as secondary.

I wish there were some sort of magic potion that would just take away all those pesky distractions once and for all.

But it seems that the "magic spell" isn't magic at all.

The key to the "magic kingdom" of having a truly productive day is just plain old discipline and focus... ugh!

I'm beginning to accept the fact that every day will be a constant battle with wandering thoughts and "shiny objects."

Almost everybody I talk with seems to have the same problem to some degree.

Part of the solution these days is just recognizing that I have the battle to face every day - but it's winnable - one task at a time.

For example, I just completed a new website.

I did it by breaking it down into doable pieces every day rather than trying to do it all non-stop.

Each day I would complete the "piece" that I had planned.

I then stopped and enjoyed the "completion" of that day's task.

Then - the next day - same thing.

I found myself feeling good each day - because I did what I needed to do - and then moved on to another smaller "something."

At the end of the day, I'm finding that I end up feeling pretty dang good because I completed so many mini-tasks.

I may have felt like I was going nowhere for a while, but my productivity at the end of the day is proving otherwise.

I'm learning to do my best at the right things... and learning to do my best to find out what the right things are.

So - that's my story... and I'm sticking to it!!!

June 23, 2021 Quote of The Day:

"You will never find time for anything. If you want time, you must make it."

Charles Buxton

I find myself always talking about how "tomorrow" I'm going to start hitting the gym or eating less junk food, or "whatever."

I find myself always believing that "tomorrow" it will be easier to do what I want to put off today.

As I write this post - it's been that very thought that has been why I missed posting for a couple of weeks... as I kept saying - "I don't feel like writing - but I know I will tomorrow - so I'll REALLY do a good job then when I feel more up to it.

What a load of hooey!!!

I know better - but I find myself still believing my own lies!

I seem to continually buy into believing tomorrow will come with more energy than today.

I have a tendency to believe that it will be easier in the future, rather than now.

I've read that there's a name for this... optimism bias.

I find myself delaying actions TODAY because I'll do a better job of ___________ tomorrow.

Again, I often think that what is hard to do today - will be easier to do tomorrow.

I buy into the delusion that my "tomorrow self" will be better than my "today" self.

That's true if my "today" self does the work for my "tomorrow" self - but I seem to forget that my "tomorrow" self will think just like my "today" self if I don't do something about tomorrow... today.

I have to become more intolerant of thinking like this!

But it's a struggle - dang it!!!

FACT... if I want to be assured of a successful, happier tomorrow, I HAVE to take advantage of today.

If I want change... I have to make change.
