Black Antelope

Black Antelope Web design and development agency specializing in custom design and web applications. We are technologists with broad experience with various platforms.

Black Antelope is a design-focused and engineering-focused digital creative agency. We started the agency in 2009 in the San Francisco Bay Area, and ever since then we’ve been engaged with creating elegant solutions for interesting projects and amazing clients. Nowadays our team hails from Seattle, Washington to Sacramento, California to London, England. Adapting to new or obscure tech is easy for

us, and we're not at all religious about any technology. Having experience with many technologies allows us to be objective when choosing a platform for a new project. Our framework experience includes Drupal Wordpress, Symfony, Laravel, CodeIgniter, CakePHP, Zend, Django, Vue, Node, React, and Angular. In terms of languages we've worked mostly with PHP, JavaScript, Ruby, Google's Go (Golang), and Python. We've worked in many industries including enterprise / B2B, tech startups, non-profits, higher education, and e-commerce. Much of the work we do is highly custom and requires a good amount of heavy lifting, in areas such as e-commerce (Drupal Commerce, Ubercart, Magento, payment gateway integrations), site/data migration, RESTful API design and development, social media design and implementation, 3rd party integrations (Salesforce, Marketo, Pardot, Hubspot, Eloqua, etc), design/dev of microsites and partner portals, multi-site and multi-language, geospatial and geo-relevant apps (MongoDB, Solr, Elasticsearch), etc. Our approach to problem solving is very organic and we use the best tools for the job. Sometimes it can mean an agile methodology and sometimes it can mean pure creativity. We are often pulled into a bigger team to augment architecture, engineering and design capabilities.

🎉 Celebrating 13 Years with UC Berkeley 🎉

For over a decade, we've partnered with UC Berkeley to design and build accessible, user-centered websites that serve students, faculty, researchers, and the broader public.

From supporting the launch of Berkeley’s first new college in over 50 years—the UC Berkeley College of Computing, Data Science, and Society—to redesigning sites for Political Science, Economics, Statistics, the Berkeley International Study Program (BISPCal), the Othering & Belonging Institute, and many more—we’ve helped shape Berkeley’s digital presence across campus.

Why do so many teams at UC Berkeley choose to work with us?

✅ Deep higher ed expertise – We understand the needs of prospective students, internal stakeholders, and public-facing departments alike.
✅ Accessibility-first design – Inclusive education starts with inclusive websites. We consistently meet—and often exceed—WCAG standards.
✅ Technical excellence – Our Drupal and WordPress solutions are built for stability, scalability, and long-term maintainability.
✅ Collaborative process – We’re not just a vendor—we’re a reliable long-term partner.

To the incredible communicators, faculty, and administrators we’ve worked with at UC Berkeley: thank you 🙏 It’s been an honor to support your mission.

Here’s to the next chapter! 🐻💛

Here’s a project we’re especially proud of, launched in partnership with the Washington State Department of Commerce last year.

The new site was built on WordPress, with a focus on accessibility, enterprise-grade search powered by Algolia, and multilingual support via WPML, delivering content in 12 languages.

We're honored to support agencies doing vital work for communities across the state. Check it out here: http://commerce.wa.gov

This project was a beast! And another shining example of a large UCB project where we at Black Antelope, have been fortunate enough to have had our expertise called upon. It's a little bit ironic that over the last decade we've done so much work with UC Berkeley, after I tried so hard 25 years ago to get in... but failed! I literally had two backdoor opportunities to get in as an undergrad, and fumbled both. Anyway, my dad went to UCB and took us kids to Cal games every chance he could get, and to his favorite restaurant on Telegraph Avenue (Larry Blake's), so I kind of grew up with a particular affinity for the university, the campus, and the city of Berkeley as well.

The College of Computing, Data Science, and Society (CDSS) at UC Berkeley is the newest college on campus, and there hasn't been any new college at UCB since the 1960s. CDSS is focused on computing and data science research, including AI and machine learning in just about every arena including health care, climate change and politics. They have several departments and programs underneath including EECS, Statistics, and Data Science.

We worked closely with CDSS’ leadership to understand their goals and vision for the new college. Our focus was on creating a modern, user-friendly, mobile-friendly, well-organized, and visually appealing website that conveyed CDSS’ position within UCB, and that is a more-useful resource for CDSS’ various audiences including students, faculty, and affiliated units.

Like many higher-education projects we've done, this site is built on Drupal and hosted on Pantheon. Drupal offers greater power and native flexibility for building large sites compared to many other CMS platforms (yes I'm talking about WordPress). It also provides far more backend consistency, usability, and accessibility for content editors.

We redesigned the site from the ground up, with as much care put into the design of the mobile experience as much as the desktop experience. The new site meets WCAG 2.1 AA accessibility requirements, which include keyboard accessibility, screen reader support, and we made heavy use of Siteimprove to help assist the accessibility phase. Like all projects we take on that involve a content migration, we followed a meticulous process of taking inventory of all public URLs, and redirecting all URLs to their new locations to ensure that the launch went without a hitch in terms of SEO and usability.

We have had the absolute honor of helping Cornish College of the Arts launch Cornish+, which is their new home for all non-academic programming. This program marks a significant milestone as it opens the doors of the Cornish campus to the public, offering a diverse array of classes in art, design, music, theater, dance, and film.

For me personally as someone who has a background in music, a profession in design, and who lives in Seattle, I take immense pride in contributing to the creation of what promises to be a highly valuable resource for both the Seattle community and the arts at large.

Cornish+ is so new that I haven't yet taken a class, but I'm planning on it and have my eye on several. There is also something seriously invigorating about being on a college campus, and I felt that deeply when I got a tour of the facilities.

For those in the Seattle area, I encourage you to explore the offerings on the Cornish+ website! https://plus.cornish.edu

This is such a special project and one that we're especially proud to be in support of! The Othering & Belonging Institute (https://belonging.berkeley.edu) at UC Berkeley is doing such important work around inclusivity and inequality, in areas including race, LGBTQ and disability. They're a central hub that brings together researchers, community organizers, policymakers and other stakeholders, into research and analysis, all in support of a more-equitable society.

The Institute’s site needed a complete design overhaul, to be migrated to the current version of Drupal, as well as enhancements to several special projects.

Script Haven (https://www.scripthaven.com/) is an entertainment-industry digital marketplace that enables writers to sell scripts for film, television and theater. They were a brand new startup that came to us with a list of their initial requirements, for us to take the rest of the way. Our organic approach to product design was a perfect fit, and Script Haven was launched fully-functional and on time.

We love collaborating on projects like Script Haven that are industry game-changers, that empower anybody with talent and an Internet connection to be competitive.

Drupal was the obvious platform choice, offering the perfect balance of CMS for a content-driven site, a flexible and modular codebase to support the necessary custom features, and its mature e-commerce capabilities. We designed and built some unique features for this application, including live chat between users that integrates price negotiation prior to purchasing, and integration of Docusign for digital contacts during the checkout process.

I LOVE when we get to work with non-profit organizations that are doing important work helping people or animals 💓🐶🐱🐕🐈🐾

SPCA International is an international non-profit supporting local animal welfare organizations and programs worldwide, including shelters, dog and cat rescue operations, and wildlife rehabilitation centers. SPCAI also provides valuable educational resources to help people take action to improve the lives of their pets and animals in need.

SPCAI came to us for a redesign of the website, an optimized mobile experience, a complete overhaul of the site’s information architecture, and a much more intuitive CMS experience for members of the team.

The result is a beautiful new Wordpress website that is engaging, effective in communicating the accomplishments of SPCAI, and flexible and robust enough to support the organization as they expand operations helping animals in need.

The Berkeley International Study Program needed a new website that better communicates its program offerings for international students, and to also highlight reasons why UC Berkeley (and the San Francisco Bay Area) is a great choice for studying abroad.

The new site is based on Drupal, an easy-to-edit CMS that is perfect for higher-education as well as informational sites. The new design is clean, modern, mobile-friendly, easy to navigate, and adheres to the ADA WCAG 2.0 accessibility requirements.

The new Student Experience section highlights many must-know UC Berkeley traditions, local favorites, and some of the SF Bay Area’s top attractions.

Check out the new UCB Polisci site that we designed and built! The department of Political Science at UC Berkeley is considered one of the top schools in the United States, as well as the entire world for the study of politics.

The new UCB Political Science website has a clean modern design, is easy to navigate, and is exceptionally mobile-friendly. Courses and events are automatically pulled in from central campus APIs, and then can be edited on the Drupal site if desired. In terms of accessibility, the site now conforms to ADA WCAG 2.0 requirements, making the site as accessible as possible to those with disabilities, and also adhering to university requirements.

Drupal excels at structured content and relationships between things. One key example on the Polisci site is the relationship between courses and faculty. During import of courses, the system automatically creates relationships to the appropriate faculty members. The result is that when browsing courses, you can easily click through to see the faculty member’s page, and conversely on the faculty member’s page you can see all of their current and future courses.

The Center for Global Health Delivery, Diplomacy & Economics (https://cghdde.berkeley.edu/), a joint venture between UC Berkeley and UC San Francisco, is a central hub that pulls together faculty and researchers from both universities that are working in global health implementation science and diplomacy. This consortium needed a robust and flexible website to catalog all of its projects, people and partners, along with related news and events.

Drupal was the perfect platform choice for this project, due to how easy-to-edit the CMS is, its emphasis on usability and accessibility, and its flexibility in terms of defining relationships between content. There are many relationships between content types, including between people and projects, organizations and projects, news and projects, and various other taxonomies / categories.

You can browse or search projects via a list view, or if you choose to you can see them all on a global map. The map is a useful way to browse projects by location, and to see at a glance where UC Berkeley and UCSF are working together on global health projects.

The Department of Statistics at UC Berkeley was one of the first established centers in the US for statistical research, and has one of the top two statistics graduate programs nationally.

Their previous website was an older version of Drupal that needed to be migrated, and the site was also in need of a redesign.

One of the major goals for the redesign was to introduce audience-driven navigation, so that relevant content would be easier to find for the department’s different audiences including current students, prospective students, faculty and staff, alumni, and industry partners.

The new UCB Statistics website has been redesigned from the ground up, to be as usable via mobile devices as the desktop version, to meet ADA WCAG 2.0 AA accessibility requirements, and to cater more-clearly to the various audiences.

To give the site its own unique twist among the land of academic department websites, we employed a graphical motif across the site called hexagonal binning, which is a visualization tool used in data analytics. For landing pages and major sub-section menus, we also used simplified visualization graphics to bring in something uniquely statistics.
