Today our fun facts are based upon the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) revolutionized the video game industry. Released in North America in 1985 after the devastating 1983 video game crash, Nintendo saved console gaming by ingeniously rebranding the system as a toy, forcing developers into strict licensing agreements, and popularizing iconic franchises.
1. The "Toy" Strategy: To overcome retailer reluctance in the wake of the 1983 market crash, Nintendo intentionally designed the console to look like a VCR rather than a computer. They also packaged the console with unique peripherals like the NES Zapper (a light gun) and R.O.B. (Robotic Operating Buddy) to emphasize play over gaming.
2. The Channel Switch: By default, the NES was designed to output on Channel 3, but users in regions with strong local Channel 3 broadcasts often had to manually switch their consoles to Channel 4 (or use RCA cables) to avoid interference.
3. The Mario Debut: While the console was already a success in Japan (where it was called the Famicom), North American and European launches were the first times a Nintendo home console was ever released alongside a bundled Mario game.
4. Paid Game Hotline: Before the internet, Nintendo operated a premium phone hotline (charging upwards of 95 cents per minute) where players could call to speak with "game counselors" for hints and tips to beat challenging titles.
5. No More Bloatware: The 1983 crash was largely blamed on an oversaturation of low-quality, untested games. To prevent this, Nintendo implemented the CIC lockout chip, ensuring that only officially licensed games developed or approved by them could run on the console. Commonly, including ourselves trip/mod the CIC lockout chip to prevent the notorious flicker no-play issue. If you ever played an NES, you know the frustration of this annoying dilemma.
