TW: Discussion of Mother’s Day

With Mother’s Day a week away, today we honor F***g, the Norse goddess of childbirth and motherhood; wife of Odin; and Queen of Asgard. F***g is also the mother of the shining Baldur, as well as the god of night, Hodur. According to myth, F***g dwells in the land of Fensalir [Old Norse: “Fen Halls.”] For many of us, our favorite day of the week is Friday and we have F***g to thank as “Friday” derives from her name, the Old English Frīġedæġ, and means “day of Frig.” In scholarly circles, there is a theory that both F***g and Freya share a common origin which is why their names, and many traits, appear similar. For those who celebrate, in honor of F***g, we wish you a wonderful Mother’s Day.

Today we are going to acknowledge the one thing that made the entire Viking age possible, the long ship! Ships and ship building were important aspects to Scandinavian culture long before the Viking age as a means of travelling through the regions deep fjords, dense forests, and many islands. The pre Viking ships were powered only by rowing which limited the sailing range to the endurance of the crew. All of this changed when Scandinavians adopted sail and mast technology in the 8th century. By harnessing the power of the wind, Scandinavians were able to travel much further. This seemingly simple technological innovation would change the course of the early medieval world forever as the Vikings emerged onto the global stage.
