⛈️ Flash flooding is ongoing across parts of southwest Missouri as repeated rounds of thunderstorms continue to produce heavy rainfall.

Several areas have already received 2-4 inches of rain, with additional rainfall expected and localized totals exceeding 5 inches possible. Flash Flood Warnings remain in effect, and emergency managers are reporting flooding impacts.

Remember: Turn Around, Don't Drown. Never drive through flooded roadways.

At the Texas Emergency Management Conference this week, we're having a lot of conversations about weather, response, and situational awareness.

A good time to revisit St. Bernard — our free EOC weather display, built to be a trusted companion in emergency weather response and inspired by conversations with emergency managers.

How is your team handling weather displays in the EOC today?

⛈️ Texas is in for an active afternoon and evening. Severe thunderstorms are expected to develop and spread across a large area, bringing the potential for large-to-very-large hail, damaging winds, frequent lightning, heavy rainfall, and even a low risk of tornadoes.

With some areas already saturated, flash flooding is also a concern. Low-water crossings, city streets, and flood-prone spots could quickly become dangerous if storms repeatedly move over the same areas.

Watch the forecast video for a closer look at what to expect. Stay weather aware, Texas.

We hear about El Niño all the time in weather headlines, but what actually causes it?

In our latest post, we break down the science behind the El Niño weather pattern and how changes in the tropical Pacific can ripple through the atmosphere, influencing weather far from the equator.

We cover:
• How ENSO works
• Why trade winds and ocean temperatures matter
• How El Niño reshapes the jet stream
• What forecasters are watching right now

If you've ever wondered why a patch of warmer ocean water can change winter weather across North America, this one's for you.

Learn how the El Niño weather pattern forms, shifts global weather, and shapes seasonal trends from the tropics to North America.

🚨 🌪️ Supercells are marching across the plains today, May 18.

As evening comes, many storms across Kansas, extending northeast to Missouri, are becoming severe or tornado-warned. Hail and heavy lightning are also being reported.

These storms are concentrated within the Moderate Risk (level 4/5) issued by the Storm Prediction Center. Eventually, the storms will form a line along a cold front. Strong winds, hail, and flash flooding will be the concern overnight.

This time of year, it's critical to stay weather-aware and have a plan for what to do when severe weather strikes.

From jet streams and circulation cells to advection and atmospheric flow, weather is shaped by systems operating on a global scale.

Our latest blog post explores the science behind global weather patterns and the observation platforms that help meteorologists understand how energy and motion move through the atmosphere.

It’s a look at the larger atmospheric processes that connect local weather to a much bigger picture.

Today, we're exploring the UV Index in South America! ☀️

During the day, UV Index levels can reach extreme highs of 11–17, especially in the Andean regions at high elevations.

Key factors include:
• High elevations increase UV exposure by 5–10% per kilometer
• Equatorial regions get more direct sunlight year-round
• Lower ozone levels in the tropics let more UV radiation through

If you're visiting South America, particularly in mountainous or equatorial areas, be sun-smart. Use high-SPF (50+) sunscreen, wear sunglasses, and dress in protective clothing, as skin can burn in under 10 minutes during peak UV times.

We're continuing to expand the specialized datasets available across our platform, including AI weather models from Meandair.

Their products combine real-time satellite imagery with multiple model inputs to improve short-term forecasting for cloud cover, turbulence, precipitation, thunderstorms, and more.

These datasets are available in Terrier for visualization, WCS for querying, and Labrador for transformation workflows with Python-friendly Zarr files.

Take a look at how these AI weather models can support aviation and operational forecasting workflows.👇https://www.wetdogweather.com/2026/05/07/meandair-weather-models-now-available/
