Each week brings new reminders that data security gaps can hit any organization, large or small. The following are some of the most notable breaches disclosed or confirmed in recent days, each reinforcing how vital proactive testing and vendor oversight have become.
1. Qantas – Personal data of 5.7 million customers exposed (via a call-centre vendor). The breach included names, frequent-flyer numbers, contact details and dates of birth.
2. Toys ‘R’ Us Canada – Customer information leaked online after a data-breach incident involving an external service provider. The leak encompassed names, email addresses, phone numbers and postal data.
3. Sotheby’s – High-value auction house confirms theft of sensitive customer data including some Social Security numbers. Hacker group publicly listed the exfiltrated information.
Why it matters:
The compromised data may not only affect customers but can serve as the launch point for identity fraud, phishing campaigns or access to corporate networks.
