Students think using big, sophisticated words will impress admissions officers.

It won't. It'll make the essay sound like someone else wrote it — and they'll know.

Write like you talk. Say something true. Say something only you could say.

That's what gets remembered. Watch this and share it with a student who needs to hear it.

I just published something on Substack that gets at the heart of why I built Soar the way I did.

The technology is the easy part. The hard part is understanding where students and counselors actually get stuck — and designing something that helps with that, not just something that looks impressive in a demo.

If you're curious about what it takes to build AI that genuinely supports this work, this one's for you.

The New York Times Times had a piece this week on AI and writing that's worth your attention if you work with students.

Read the article here: https://www.nytimes.com/2026/04/30/us/ai-students-cheating-homework-classrooms.html

The core finding isn't surprising to anyone in this field: AI-assisted writing tends to be more polished but less interesting. When students write in their own words and actually wrestle with their ideas, their thinking is better.

That's why the Writing Hub in Soar—our new AI college and career planning assistant—keeps the human in charge. The counselor or mentor guides the writing process; AI doesn't write the essay, the student does.

We're close to a public beta. Stay tuned.

"How do I pick a major?" It's the question that keeps high schoolers up at night—and, honestly, keeps parents up, too.

In this video, I share how I walk students through it. The short version: you're not locking anything in forever; you're making a thoughtful starting choice.

Watch the video, then come find us at https://www.lifelaunchr.com/ if you want to talk through where your student is in the process.

Summer before senior year feels like a finish line. It's actually a starting line.

The juniors who have the least stressful falls are the ones who write one college essay draft over the summer. Not a perfect draft. Just a first one.

That's it. One draft in June or July changes everything by September.

Junior year exams are almost over, and students are ready to exhale. Completely understandable.

But this summer is not the time to go dark on college prep. It's the most important stretch left.

Essays get drafted. The activity list gets refined. Students figure out the story they want to tell. The ones who do this work over the summer walk into senior year with confidence. The ones who don't spend the fall in a panic.

A few focused hours a week is all it takes. The payoff is enormous.

She got into BS/MD programs — guaranteed medical school admission right out of high school. That's a big deal.

She turned them down.

She chose the University Research Scholars Program at the University of Florida instead, because she wants to keep her options open and apply to the best medical schools when she's ready. Not the one that was pre-selected for her at 17.

That kind of thinking doesn't happen by accident. It takes real self-knowledge.

Proud of this student. She's going to do great things. Visit lifelaunchr.com if your student is figuring out their path.

AI is changing college admissions faster than most families realize. Students are using it. Colleges are watching for it. And the line between helpful and harmful is blurry.

This short video cuts through the noise and tells you what you actually need to know. If you want to see how I've built AI into college planning the right way, request an invite to Soar at https://soar.lifelaunchr.com/.

A parent asked me recently: "Are we too late?"

She wasn't asking about deadlines. She was asking for permission to stop feeling guilty and start doing something.

That's the real question underneath almost everything parents of juniors ask me. And the answer, almost always: the window isn't as closed as you think.

I wrote about this on Substack this week. If you're the parent of a rising junior or sophomore and you've felt that anxiety, read this.

CS enrollment is falling because students are scared AI will make the major irrelevant.

Here's my honest take: the fear is understandable, but the conclusion is wrong.

Read the article here:

Math, logic, and systems thinking don't go out of style. What changes is the layer on top. Students who learn to use AI effectively, and who invest in communication and leadership alongside their technical skills, are going to stand out—not disappear.

This is actually a moment of opportunity for the right students.

If your junior is thinking about CS, I'd love to talk.
