The United States government is seeking more information about the Huawei Mate 60 Pro, a Chinese smartphone powered by an advanced chip. In 2019, the government banned US companies from selling software and equipment to Huawei and restricted international chipmakers using US-made technology from partnering with Huawei. The government cited perceived national security concerns, such as the potential for cyberattacks or spying from the Chinese governement. The inclusion of a custom-built 5G chip would be a major benchmark for Huawei as it grapples with the impact of the US restrictions on its device business.

California forces companies to show pay on job listings, revealing big tech salaries. A new law that went into effect this week requires most California employers to disclose salaries on job listings. California is the latest and biggest of the states and cities that have enacted pay transparency laws, including Colorado and New York City. But more than 20% of Fortune 500 companies are based in California, including leaders in technology and media, and advocates hope that California's new law will be the tipping point that turns posting salary information into standard practice.

Apple raises prices on its TV and Music streaming services. Apple on Monday increased monthly and annual subscription prices for its streaming services Apple TV+ and Apple Music.
It also raised prices for the Apple One bundle.
In a statement, Apple said the price increase for Apple Music was because of increased music licensing costs.

The last time Apple changed the megapixel count of its main camera was in 2015 with the iPhone 6S. Now, the main camera takes another leap. The photo sensors on last year's models captured 12 megapixels of image data, but the cameras on the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max grab 48 megapixels. More megapixels doesn't mean a better photo, but it does mean the ability to capture more detail (and print your photos in larger sizes). It, along with a new image-processing pipeline called the Photonic Engine, is supposed to represent a sea change for the iPhone camera. Unfortunately, I'm not noticing a big upgrade in any meaningful way over last year.

Rivian shows off the R1T’s Gear Guard security features. Rivian has come out with a video about the Gear Guard system for the R1T, which shows off the electric pickup’s ability to record video if people get too close and to send a notification to an owner’s phone if there’s an event significant enough to set off the car alarm. As Rivian’s UX designer explains in the video, Gear Guard isn’t one specific feature, but rather a suite of systems that can work together — the video monitoring system is part of Gear Guard, but so is the cable which you can use to lock bikes, kayaks, and more to the truck.

Google loses Sonos smart speakers patent fight
Smart-speaker firm Sonos has won a major legal battle against Google over patents it said the firm had infringed.
The decision means that Google's smart speakers and other smart home tech that uses the offending systems cannot be imported to the United States.
Sonos contends that Google will have to "degrade" its speakers if it refuses to pay Sonos a licensing fee.
But the tech giant says it has already devised workarounds to prevent any interruptions.

Roofing giant takes on Tesla to make solar roof shingles more affordable Now GAF Energy, the sister company to one of the largest roofing companies in the world and a division of privately held Standard Industries, is launching a new solar shingle effort. It just released a product called Timberline Solar, which the company says will be cheaper and more reliable than Tesla’s Solar Roof. It just won the Best of Innovation Award for Smart Cities at CES.

The New York City Police Department is considering purchasing up to 250 Tesla Model 3 electric cars, according to a report from Bloomberg.

The deal would be worth about $12.36 million, according to the Department of Citywide Administrative Services. Bloomberg reported that the agency would pay nearly $52,000 for each vehicle, based on a copy of the procurement contract.

If finalized, the purchase would be a part of the city's push toward an all-electric police fleet. In July, the NYPD bought a Model 3 for $47,740 to add to its highway patrol division.
