Something that really bothers me is the price of used motherboards on ebay. Why are people asking for the exact same amount for a used board missing IO shields, missing wifi antenna, dusty, and not guaranteed to work that a new board is going for? $80 for a new B550 with WiFi and all the accessories or $80 for a used B550 with no accessories and then you gotta spend $15/$20 on a wifi card?

If you have a used board the price should reflect that. Also if its missing the accessories the price should reflect that too. Thats why a lot of my budget builds still use a new board, just like before ram got to be so pricy id still get new ram because people were asking for the same amount for their used ram that new ram was going for.

Had to buy a replacement ARGB hub for a build. I had one on hand from a previous build. It was old but would have done the job. Sadly it gave its last hurrah, igniting 7 fans in glorious RGB before going dark. No amount of reseting, prayers, or connector wiggling got it back working and I confirmed it was bad by trying a replacement hub that clashed widly with the build.

Fast forward to the replacement I bought. This is a piece of tech that is gonna go in the back never to be seen until someone in the future takes off the back panel. Yet if it happens while the PC is powered on they will see this little thing glowing with the light of RGB since it has led strips on it.

The most useless form of RGB I've ever seen.

Kinda grainy pics but this is a coworkers PC we built at work and then I had to do some more work on at home. Specs are i7 11700k, 32Gb DDR4, 1Tb SSD and 1Tb HDD, RTX 3080, 850 Watt PSU.

BIOS had to be updated to even allow Windows 11 to install via a USB. SSD was previously used in an HP laptop so it acted like it was still in there. Coworker is coming from a laptop and old FM2+ GTX 750 1Gb PC so this is a nice upgrade and should last until DDR5 comes back down from its price hike.

Custom build in process for a long distance customer. Specs are ryzen 9 3900x, 32gb DDR4, 1Tb SSD, B550 Motherboard, RTX 3070ti, and a 750 watt PSU all wrapped up in the Lian Li V00 with 7x 120mm ARGB Fans.

Case has a GPU support bracket that attaches to the middle bottom and middle mobo standoffs. Cant wait to see if the holes actually line up well or not.

One final piece of uniqueness to this case is the front has a platform you can reveal to put a figurine on top of. It didnt come with any fans but for $50 this was a really nice case. The hardware even came in a plastic clam shell case instead of a baggie.

The concept of "future proofing" a PC build is a slippery slope. While it can make sense its only for the not too distant future. Ive seen many computers that claim to be future proofed: running the latest in PC advancements and costing a good chunk more to allow the most time to pass without upgrades.

But let's look at a recent development: 12vhpwr connectors. While not every GPU has these many do and While theres still risks to these connectors older power supplies won't have these built in. Yes there are adapters but thats not a native "future proof" advantage.

Looking back even further sata m.2 drives might have been a feature to have but many boards nowadays do not work with them. No it might not affect the built PC but still something to think of.

DDR/2/3/4/5 and who knows whats next. I wouldn't say you should spend extra on features just bc of future proofing your build bc whose to say you do and next month the next advancement is announced.

Do research and ask for advice. Do what makes sense for your budget and know that when new tech comes out you can adapt your build. Its better to performance proof your build: use parts that allow the most performance vs spending extra just to not upgrade in the future.

Part of what makes computers so fun to work with is just how modular they are. And no build that claims to be future proof really is. Old i7 processors are now outperformed by i3 that are cheaper than the release msrp of the i7. Some parts are now legacy or just down right not supported.

Just a thought I had this morning when I saw a post of a pc from the late 90s claiming to be future proofed and never being left behind to the forces of time.
