How does a shotgun microphone focus on sound coming from one direction? We put one under X-ray to look inside and see the design that makes it possible.

Shotgun microphones use a long interference tube with carefully spaced openings to reduce unwanted sound arriving from the sides while emphasizing sound coming from directly in front of the microphone. Under X-ray, we can see how the internal microphone capsule, electronics, and interference tube are arranged without taking the microphone apart.

Check out this X-ray of regular lotion (on the left) next to sunscreen. Even in X-ray, the sunscreen absorbs more photons.

Outdoor electronics must survive heat, moisture, sunlight, and constant temperature changes, so even a small assembly issue can become a major failure over time. These aftermarket solar panel cables looked melted from the outside, but X-ray inspection revealed the real problem was happening internally at the wire-to-pin connection.

Corrosion and excess resistance eventually led to overheating and failure. It’s a good reminder that the damage you see on the outside is often only part of the story, and X-ray can help reveal what actually caused it.
