A replacement AC adapter seemed like a simple solution until it melted.

In this video, we use X-ray inspection to look inside a failed aftermarket power adapter and investigate what may have contributed to the failure. From component placement and material quality to electrical spacing and manufacturing practices, small differences can have a major impact on performance, reliability, and safety.

See what was hidden inside and learn why OEM and aftermarket power components are not always built to the same standards.

Most people think the metal shell is the USB-C connector.

It’s not.

Under X-ray, the real technology becomes visible: microscopic pins, embedded circuitry, shielding layers, precision solder joints, and high-speed data paths packed into something small enough to fit in your pocket.

Modern USB-C cables can simultaneously carry:
• High-speed data
• Video output
• Intelligent power delivery

And manufacturers have to engineer around heat, signal interference, mechanical stress, and microscopic tolerances to make it all work reliably.

In this video, we take a look inside USB-C with X-ray imaging to reveal the hidden engineering most people never see.

You’ve probably never noticed it, but this one battery cell powers some of the most popular devices on the planet. From power tools and battery banks to e-bikes and electric vehicles, the 18650 became the foundation of modern portable electronics.

We took several devices into the X-ray lab to see how manufacturers build around these cells and why packaging, protection circuitry, and thermal management matter so much. When you pack this much energy into a small space, design and manufacturing become critical and there’s a lot more engineering inside these battery packs than most people realize.

Will this iPhone be your next laptop?

Because that’s exactly what Apple is betting on. The MacBook Neo is powered by the same kind of silicon you’d find in an iPhone and that completely changes how the system is designed and built. We put it under X-ray to see what that actually looks like. From highly integrated PCBs to advanced chip packaging, everything is optimized for efficiency, density, and performance. Instead of traditional desktop-style processors, this design follows mobile principles tight integration, lower power consumption, and a unified architecture that reshapes the entire board layout. It’s a great example of how manufacturing evolves when mobile and desktop worlds collide.

As electronics continue to shrink, inspection challenges continue to grow.

Today’s assemblies are denser, more complex, and packed with features that conventional 2D X-ray systems struggle to fully inspect. Double-sided boards, embedded cooling channels, hidden antennas, stacked components, and increasingly compact architectures are changing the game for electronics manufacturing. That’s why advanced X-ray modalities like CT and Planar CT are becoming essential for modern inspection workflows. Seeing through overlapping structures and isolating hidden defects requires more than traditional imaging.

If these challenges are already on your radar, or even if they’re just starting to appear on your roadmap, stop by Booth #27 at the SMTA Upper Midwest Expo and talk with Troy Johnson about Creative Electron’s modular X-ray platform.

Our systems are designed to evolve with your process:

• Modular CT capabilities
• AI-powered inspection tools
• Expandable software apps and workflows
• Upgrade paths that adapt as your inspection needs grow

You may not need every capability today. But when your products become more compact and more complex tomorrow, your inspection system should already be ready.

CT data can show you incredible detail, but it’s still just an image on a screen. In this video, Bill turns that data into 3D printed BGA balls to make internal defects like voids and incomplete joints easier to understand in a physical way.

It also shows why different X-ray techniques matter. 2D can quickly highlight issues, laminography helps separate overlapping features, and CT reveals the full internal structure. Using the right approach, or combining them, is what turns inspection into real insight.

Trying to fit larger parts into your X-ray machine? Modifying the cabinet isn’t the solution.

We’ve seen people drill or cut into systems to make space but that compromises shielding, safety, and image quality.

X-ray systems are engineered for precision and protection. Change that, and performance suffers.

At Creative Electron, we specialize in custom X-ray systems and integrations for unique environments with safety as the top priority.

If your needs grow, don’t DIY get a solution designed for your application.

Most battery packs you see are actually just cylindrical cells in series or parallel! And the most common cell is the GOAT the 18650 seen here in hot pink! We x-rayed a few of our favorite packs to confirm the x-ray secret. The standardized use of these cells helps manufacturers make battery pack available for all your favorite devices.
