Enterprise oil and gas drone programs run ten to twenty flights per site per month. An autonomous program at scale runs closer to a thousand.

Bridging those two numbers was what Nitin Gupta, CEO and Founder of FlytBase, walked through at the EDR Summit. Joining him was Ross Doak, Offshore Robotics Program Manager at Shell.

The bottlenecks are familiar. Cost per flight caps the volume. Data has no system of record. Automated analysis works for a handful of flights and does not survive a program.

Ross brought the operator's view. Shell is deploying drone-in-a-box offshore as infrastructure, the way control systems get deployed. Automated rounds. Fewer crews on helicopters. The drone is now a layer of the site.

The operating model that closes the gap looks different. One operator runs many docks. Every capture is tied to its asset. AI reads inspection history and SOPs before flagging. The system assigns the work it finds.

That is the operating model for energy operations in the age of AI.

When the conversation about scaling autonomous drone operations in oil and gas moves from theory to production, the room has to include the operators.

At EDR Summit 2026, Nitin Gupta will be joined on stage by Ross Doak, Offshore Robotics Program Manager at Shell, for the session on Drone for Energy Operations in the Age of AI: A New Operating Model.

The operator's attention does not multiply with the fleet.

At ten or twenty active drones, every second on the dashboard pulls a second from the field, until the operator stops watching the field and starts managing the interface.

FlytBase one-to-many operations are built around that limit. One operator, one screen, the entire fleet.

A video wall keeps a live tile for every drone, with status, altitude, and active mission updating in real time. Fleet Control issues a unified command across one or many drones at once. Direct Launch, Go-to-Location, and alarm response live in the same table and open as overlays, so the rest of the fleet stays visible. Scalable AI and data across drone and robotics programs used to be a story told one customer at a time. At EDR 2025 in Houston, Dhiraj Dhule, Director of Products at FlytBase, sat on the panel that pulled those individual stories together.

A year on, the picture has filled in. Those case studies no longer stand alone. The conversation in energy operations has moved past any single technology. The interesting question now is what happens when they all run together.
