Physical AI has to work in the real world. And the real world is messy.

This week, we’re taking the stage for two conversations at Ruggedize about what it takes to build AI that can perceive, navigate, and act reliably in complex physical environments.

Tomorrow, John Macdonald will share why we believe agriculture is the proving ground for physical AI and how solving for its complexity creates a foundation that can scale across other off-road industries.

Physical AI is moving from research to real-world deployment and that shift requires a very different set of tools, models and approaches.

When we began our action model journey, we explored vision-language-action models (VLAs). But applying them in unstructured farm environments exposed real-world limitations that pushed us toward world models.

Today, our approach combines years of real-world deployment data with our Bonsai World Model, post-trained from NVIDIA Cosmos. It powers our generative data engine for creating photorealistic synthetic vehicle data to tackle edge cases and accelerate expansion into new environments.

The real test of AI isn’t what it can do on a screen. It’s what happens when AI enters the physical world.

When intelligent machines are farming fields, flying aircraft, and working alongside people, a great demo isn’t enough. They have to perform reliably in dynamic, unpredictable environments and earn the trust of the people who depend on them.

Meet Rootline Robotics from Cornell University - Grand Prize winners of this year's Farm Robotics Challenge and a $50,000 SAFE investment sponsored by Reservoir Farms.

For growers, the payoff is a w**der that thinks for itself: an autonomous, perception-driven robot built on the Amiga platform that spots individual w**ds in orchards and vineyards and eliminates them with a targeted electrical microshock. No blanket spraying, no manual labor, just precision treatment plant by plant. And because their electrobiological approach delivers only about 30 joules per plant, versus the continuous high-power discharge conventional electric w**ders require, growers get the same effectiveness at a fraction of the energy cost.

It's hard not to get excited watching a student team pull this off. Rootline Robotics combined computer vision, machine learning, depth sensing, and a custom robotic arm to rethink a stubborn farming problem from the ground up - exactly the kind of ingenuity that impressed the judges most. They didn't stop at a lab prototype either: they validated the system at Crist Bros Orchards, a 500-acre commercial apple operation in New York, proving this technology is ready to make a real difference in the field.

Meet MRC Farm Robotics from the Mark Richardson Career and Technical Center, recipients of the first-ever Amiga Innovation Award presented to a high school team at this year's Farm Robotics Challenge ceremony within the Santa Maria Joint Union High School District.

The team developed an autonomous foliar feeding robot by integrating commercially available technologies into a practical, grower-friendly solution designed for small-scale farms. What stood out most wasn't just the technology, it was the team's focus on usability, affordability, and real-world deployment. By combining off-the-shelf components into a system that could be implemented today, MRC Farm Robotics demonstrated the kind of practical innovation that helps move agricultural automation from concept to reality.

They'll be showing off their award-winning Amiga at the California Youth Ag Expo this weekend in Tulare, CA. We'll be there with our partners UC Agriculture & Natural Resources to invite California 4-H and National FFA Organization chapters to participate in the 2027 Challenge. Registration opens next month.
