Ahatanhel Krymskyi, a phenomenal Ukrainian Orientalist, polyglot, and historian, was born on this day in 1871. He had diverse roots but was totally in love with the Ukrainian language and history 🇺🇦

Here are 5 facts about his life:

1️⃣ It's hard to comprehend: he knew over 60 languages and joked saying "It will be easier to say which languages I don't know."

2️⃣ Thanks to his skilful translations, the world could read the masterpieces of Ukrainian writers, and Ukrainian speakers — works of world-renowned geniuses.

3️⃣ His legacy reaches far wider than translations — he was an exceptional researcher. In 1918, he became one of the founders of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.

4️⃣ His work was highly appreciated not only in Ukraine — Krymskyi was included in the list of outstanding world figures by the UNESCO General Assembly.

5️⃣ The genius's fate was not easy — because of his devoted love for Ukraine, the Soviet authorities persecuted him since 1930. His works were banned, he was arrested and imprisoned. Officially, Krymskyi died from exhaustion, but there is a version that he might have died due to cruel torture.
