A sad, sad day in technology. Whether you love or hate Apple, virtually every piece of computer technology released in the past 25 years has been influenced by Steve Jobs & Apple. I hope they continue to innovate for another 25 years.

Apple's Steve Jobs resigned as CEO of the company he founded. The company's current chief operating officer, Tim Cook, was named as his successor. Jobs was elected chairman of the board.

Apple has included high quality speech synthesis voices in MacOS X 10.7 Lion. Since Lion is the first downloadable OS upgrade, Apple isn't downloading everything until you need/ask for it, then it grabs it off the Internet. You might want to play with these. I like my Mac to speak dialog box text after a minute, although it does freak people out a little.

Apple's OS X 10.7 Lion operating system comes with brand-new, high-quality text-to-speech voices. Here is how to enable these on your system. Read this blog post by Topher Kessler on MacFixIt.

Classic (OS 9 app support) was removed when we moved from Motorola PowerPC to Intel CPUs. On Intel Macs, Rosetta offered support for PowerPC apps. With the release of MacOS X 10.7, it's time to say goodbye to PowerPC apps: Rosetta is removed. You may need some upgrades. Need help? Call Nolex.

Older PowerPC applications require translation to run on Intel Macs; however, with the rumor that Apple is dropping all PowerPC support in OS X 10.7 Lion, you may want to check your installed applications to see if any are PowerPC-only. Read this blog post by Topher Kessler on MacFixIt.

If any of your apps require Java, 10.7 should automatically install Apple's 10.6 Java Runtime Environment. At some point Apple will stop supporting this, and Oracle (who purchased Sun) will pick up the reins & do it themselves. OpenOffice (owned by Sun / Oracle) is written in Java, so I'm reasonably sure Java will continue on for the Mac.

Apple has made Java for OS X 10.7 Lion available as a downloadable installation, or like Rosetta as an optional installation whenever you launch an application that requires it. Read this blog post by Topher Kessler on MacFixIt.

Filemaker is not quite 10.7 ready yet. You should hold off. I can't upgrade to Lion until they fix their bugs.

Stay tuned for new security updates and database security notifications.

Some MS Office users are reporting some odd Office behavior after upgrading to 10.7. Might want to hold out a few days to see how this shakes out.

Access to files stored on a SharePoint server requires connectivity to Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 or later.

Apple has released MacOS X 10.7 Lion. If you're the kind of Mac user who mainly uses Apple apps you're probably fine to upgrade. But if you use any non-Apple apps, always make sure you check that your apps are compatible! Some applications will be updated shortly after a new OS release, some take longer, some older versions never will! And be ESPECIALLY CAUTIOUS upgrading OS software on servers! Call Nolex to help.

Mac OS X Lion compatible applications and incompatible applications, upgrade and substitute options for Quicken, Creative Suite, Office, Eudora, Filemaker, and more.
