Mental health platforms are evolving fast. Their billing systems need to keep up.

From flat subscriptions to variable charges and evaluation-to-membership models, each billing approach comes with its own breaking points as platforms scale.

The challenge isn’t always the pricing model itself. It’s everything happening around it: disconnected systems, complex payment failures, cancellation logic, and churn that’s difficult to distinguish between voluntary and involuntary.

Our latest blog breaks down the three most common mental health billing models, where they start to crack, and what platforms should consider before complexity turns into lost revenue or a poor subscriber experience.

What happens when you bring subscription leaders together, add cocktails, and put retention on the menu? 🍸

We found out at Recurly’s Sips & Subscriptions happy hour.

This intimate virtual experience brought together subscription leaders for a hands-on cocktail class and, more importantly, an open conversation about what’s actually working when it comes to retention.

A few takeaways stood out:
🥃 Discounts aren’t always the long game. Price reductions can help drive initial conversion, but they can also train subscribers to wait for the next deal.

⏸️ Pause is having a moment. From seasonal usage to changing customer needs, giving subscribers a way to step back without fully churning can create a better path to retention.

🎯 Personalization matters after the pause, too. Re-engaging subscribers at the right time, based on their usage patterns and peak seasons, can make the difference between a temporary pause and a permanent churn.

And, of course, there was plenty of great conversation, friendly competition, and a few cocktail creations along the way. 🍹

Thank you to everyone who joined us and shared your experiences, questions, and ideas. We loved having you at the table.

💡 52% of consumers canceled a subscription over the past year.
But here is the critical insight most revenue teams miss: churn isn't always permanent.

Nearly 1 in 4 new subscription sign-ups are actually win-backs.
Most legacy payment tools stop at basic billing. When you treat subscriber management as a full lifecycle, connecting plan creation, payment recovery, subscriber retention, and dynamic win-back offers, you turn potential churn into long-term LTV.

Key levers driving retention right now:

- The "pause" dividend: Top merchants drove a 337% increase in pause usage to retain customers who would have otherwise canceled.

- Billing flexibility: 78% of merchants now offer both monthly and annual plans to give users autonomy over how they pay.

- Smart recovery: Leveraging dynamic Account Updaters and AI-powered retry logic to fix failed transactions automatically.

Is your payment infrastructure actively protecting your recurring revenue, or letting win-back opportunities slide?

“You’re canceled!” Consumers are saying it more often. But that doesn’t mean the relationship has to end.

Recurly CEO Joe Rohrlich spoke with The New York Post about the rise of subscription fatigue, why consumers are taking a harder look at what they’re paying for, and how subscription businesses can respond.

One stat stood out: brands offering “pause before cancel” saw 337% more pauses, and 75% of those subscribers returned within months.
Because sometimes the best retention strategy isn’t convincing a customer to stay.

It’s giving them a reason to come back.
