A disturbing gap in the healthcare landscape
The high tech IT sector, especially the domain of mobile and web applications, has been booming in the US, India and a few other tech savvy countries for more than a decade now. Recent statistics and reports have shown that the unprecedented growth in the particular sector has been a major factor behind the phenomenon called digital innovation and transformation. Although healthcare is among those application verticals that have been immensely benefited by these high tech advancements, some critical sub-domains such as women's health are yet to be impacted by these advancements. Not every woman in India is fortunate to have an easy access to critical health information, leading to delayed diagnoses and treatments. This is particularly problematic in rural areas, where healthcare facilities are scarce and transportation to urban centers is often challenging. Women in these regions are deprived of timely medical advice, which exacerbates health issues and increases the risk of complications. Furthermore, the lack of personalized analytics means that women are unable to track their menstrual cycles, fertility windows, and symptoms effectively, resulting in higher rates of undetected conditions such as PCOD, PCOS and endometriosis.
On a broader scale, the absence of such apps also hinders women's empowerment and workforce participation. Health complications that do not often get diagnosed or properly treated can lead to increased absenteeism from work or even job loss, affecting their economic stability. In educational settings, young women may miss school due to menstrual health issues, impacting their academic performance and future opportunities. Additionally, the societal stigma around discussing gynecological health further compounds these problems, as women may be reluctant to seek help. A technology-based solution could provide discreet, reliable, and accessible information, fostering a more informed and healthy female population. The lack of such apps therefore not only affects individual health outcomes but also has far-reaching implications for the social and economic development of women in India.
