Building a working prototype is a major milestone… but it's never the finish line.

This is where the real challenge begins.

In our article, Prototype to Production: How Hardware Companies Successfully Scale Manufacturing, we break down the 7 critical stages required to move from a working prototype to scalable production.

Many hardware startups hit a wall because they treat manufacturing as a late-stage handoff. In reality, scaling a product is a strategic, multi-stage process that requires engineering refinement, rigorous validation, and intentional supplier development.

Why do so many promising hardware companies struggle?

→ Manufacturing is treated as an afterthought. Products designed without manufacturing input are often difficult and expensive to produce.

→ Development teams work in silos. Handing projects from one company to another with little collaboration leads to inefficiencies, redesigns, and lost design intent.

→ Prototyping is viewed as a milestone instead of a process. Successful products are developed through continuous testing, learning, refinement, and validation.

→ Suppliers are selected based on price alone. The lowest quote often results in the highest total cost of ownership through quality issues, delays, and production inefficiencies.

The key to successful scaling is integration.

Industrial design, engineering, prototyping, and manufacturing should evolve together, not independently. Aligning these disciplines from the beginning reduces risk, protects design intent, and creates a more efficient path to market.

Key takeaway: Don't just build a product. Build a scalable system that supports long-term growth.

What should the future of beauty technology look like?

We’re excited to take that conversation to an international stage.

Our Founder, Andrew Bowen, is heading to Poland for this year’s C-IDEA Design Award Krosno Design Festival, where he’ll discuss the design philosophy and technical innovation behind the CO.8 Cosmetics Device.

For us, CO.8 isn’t simply about creating another beauty device. It’s about questioning how cosmetics are made, experienced, and consumed. Three principles shaped our approach:

→ Inclusivity — Why should innovation focus only on the largest or most profitable consumer groups?

→ Sustainability — Can we reduce the waste and overconsumption built into traditional cosmetics?

→ User-Centricity — What happens when we put the capabilities of a cosmetic factory directly into the hands of consumers?

These questions led us to rethink the relationship between technology, formulation, packaging, and the user experience.

We’re looking forward to sharing our perspective in Krosno and, more importantly, hearing from others.

What do you think is the biggest opportunity or biggest problem to solve in the future of beauty technology?

We’d love to hear your perspective.

When: September 3-6, 2026
Where: Krosno, Poland

How Much Does It Cost to Develop a Hardware Product?

We break down the five critical cost areas and reveal the biggest driver: Misalignment

Successful products are built through intentional investment at every stage:

→ Design that builds IP
→ Engineering that integrates seamlessly
→ Prototyping that validates decisions
→ Branding that creates cohesion
→ Manufacturing that enables scale

At Unbox Product Design, we approach development as a connected system, ensuring every decision contributes to a scalable, market-ready result.

“In the age of AI, why still sketch by hand?”

Because speed, clarity, and invention still require human control.

In product development, traditional sketching delivers:
→ Speed — rapid iteration without tool friction
→ Control — precise articulation of intent and form
→ Invention — creating what doesn’t yet exist
→ Engineering — thinking through parts and assemblies early
→ Manufacturing — designing with feasibility in mind from day one
→ Branding — aligning concepts to a clear design language
→ Differentiation — exploring radically different directions quickly

And yes craft still matters.
The best products come from teams who value both precision and creativity.

If you’re building hardware and need to move from idea to a scalable, market-ready product, schedule a discovery call and start with clarity and control.
