Gartner's strategic predictions point to a major shift in connected systems by 2030, as physical AI, autonomous agents, and runtime governance move closer together.

Key expectations include:

80% of front-line workers at international companies assisted by physical AI systems, including robots, drones, and autonomous vehicles.
More than 10 billion autonomous agents created by individuals, businesses, and governments by the end of the decade.

The implications reach beyond software. As AI systems gain access to machines, vehicles, energy infrastructure, and connected operational environments, IoT infrastructure may need to manage identity, permissions, audit trails, and traceability at runtime.

Energy management is also becoming part of the shift, with large enterprises expected to own $10 trillion in energy assets by 2030 and increasingly sell power to grids and AI data centers.

How should enterprises prepare for AI systems that can act in the physical environment?

Viasat and Space42 have signed a binding agreement to establish Equatys, a shared satellite and ground infrastructure venture for direct-to-device and advanced mobile satellite services.

The planned founder equity reaches up to $1 billion, with both companies expected to contribute $400 million each, and Space42 planning an additional $200 million in a future funding round open to third-party investors.

Equatys is designed as a neutral infrastructure layer that multiple mobile and satellite operators could use. The model is intended to support shared satellites and ground systems, while keeping spectrum rights, customers, and commercial relationships with licensed operators.

The venture is built around 3GPP non-terrestrial-network standards and is intended to connect conventional smartphones, IoT devices, and other terminals directly to satellites. The initial architecture is planned to scale to as many as 2,800 satellites across 60 orbital planes and three altitude layers.

How do you see shared satellite infrastructure shaping IoT connectivity?

Iridium, Deutsche Telekom IoT, and Toyota have demonstrated a voice message sent from a vehicle over Iridium’s low-Earth orbit satellite network using standards-based NB-IoT connectivity.

The test extended satellite IoT beyond the usual telemetry and short data messages. It used a Nordic Semiconductor nRF9151 development board, a Deutsche Telekom IoT SIM, and Fraunhofer IIS’s AI-based NESC voice codec.

The first transmitted message, “testing, testing, one, two, freeway,” traveled across the operational LEO constellation. The demonstration also followed earlier two-way NB-IoT messaging trials over the same network.

Iridium and Deutsche Telekom IoT have also completed the technical integration of their networks and a global roaming agreement. Eligible Deutsche Telekom IoT customers using compatible NB-IoT devices are intended to move between terrestrial coverage and Iridium satellites using Deutsche Telekom’s Global SIM.

Commercial availability of NTN Direct for Deutsche Telekom IoT customers is planned for the fourth quarter of 2026, with selected European customers already testing applications on the network. How do you see narrowband satellite voice messaging fitting into IoT deployments?

Nearly one million Polaris smart meters in Uttar Pradesh are now operating with Wirepas RF mesh connectivity, creating meter to meter networks that reduce dependence on cellular coverage and dedicated gateways.

The deployment supports India's national smart metering programme and addresses a difficult rural connectivity environment, where close to 78% of the state’s population lives in villages. Instead of requiring a SIM card in every device, the meters can relay data through the network, while dual communication meters use cellular connectivity where needed.

This approach changes the economics of large scale AMI rollout by letting each added meter contribute to network coverage. It also allows cellular connectivity to act as a complementary path rather than the default for every endpoint.

How do you see mesh architecture shaping future smart metering deployments?

Anthropic has opened a research preview of the Model Hardware Standard, a proposed specification designed to give AI agents a shared interface for operating programmable devices.

The initiative is aimed at reducing one of industrial IoT’s persistent integration barriers. It could help agents discover, monitor, and operate equipment such as sensors, microscopes, liquid handlers, and robotic arms.

Key points from the proposal include:
Standardized drivers for device capabilities and operating limits
Compatibility with application programming interfaces, command-line tools, and the Model Context Protocol
Initial testing with selected scientific laboratories and advanced manufacturers
Planned safety evaluations and operating practices before the standard is made open source

The bigger question is not only interoperability, but control. A standard interface can describe commands and limits, yet it cannot guarantee that an agent will choose the right action in every physical setting.

How should safety boundaries be defined as AI agents take on more direct control of equipment?

Netmore is adding Kinéis satellite connectivity to its LoRaWAN offering, creating a hybrid terrestrial-satellite option for IoT devices that move beyond terrestrial coverage.

The partnership is designed to let devices use terrestrial LoRaWAN where coverage is available and switch to satellite connectivity when they move outside that footprint. Switching between the two networks is automated.

Key details include:

Netmore will offer Kinéis connectivity across the 18 countries where it currently operates.
Both satellite and terrestrial connectivity will be delivered through Netmore’s ThingPark platform.
Kinéis operates a constellation of 25 satellites dedicated to IoT and AIS services.
Existing hybrid LoRaWAN and satellite products are already available from several vendors.

The setup may be relevant for logistics tracking, water infrastructure, industrial installations, and environmental monitoring.

How could automated hybrid connectivity affect IoT deployment planning?

Remote patient monitoring succeeds or fails at the platform layer between connected devices and clinicians.

Blood pressure cuffs, glucose meters, pulse oximeters, weight scales, and cardiac patches now send data with ease. The challenge is turning those readings into something clinicians can act on without overwhelming them.

Key points from the discussion:
- Continuous devices can generate massive volumes of data, with most readings being routine.
- Alert design matters, since staff stop trusting notifications that appear too often.
- Device integration varies by manufacturer, connection method, data format, and timestamp handling.
- Clinical value rises when selected readings reach the electronic health record, not only a dashboard.
- Regulatory classification should be considered early because it shapes the development process.

The platforms that work usually start narrow, with one condition, a small device set, and alerting that can be tuned by the care team. What part of remote monitoring is most often overlooked in planning?
