An Ordinary Man
I am not an ordinary man with ordinary dreams. I aspire to be more than my dreams. Isn't it amazing how easy it is to settle in life and say to yourself, "This is my lot in life. This is good enough." How many people would say that and not accept the challenge to be more than they thought they could be. My lot in life is to be all I can be. I'm not settling for what I have, although it would be easy. I'm going for all I can get and I'm going to do it in a style that befits me: I'm going to take the steps that are necessary for me to get what I want and deserve in a righteous way; My path is before me and I won't stop until the end. In the Bible, David's legacy speaks for itself. David, Son of Jesse, was an ordinary young man, the youngest in his family. He was seemingly an insignificant Shepherd on the hills of Bethlehem. Yet God saw David's heart and had a plan for him. King Saul had been rejected by God for disobedience. While the prophet Samuel Mourns Saul's choices, God calls Samuel to anoint a different King, one of Jesse's sons. When Samuel saw the handsome, tall Eliab, he naturally thought, "surely the Lord's anointed stands here before the Lord." However, God's strategy to select a King was much different than Samuel's. In fact, God said no to each of Jesse's sons, except the youngest one. Selecting David as King was definitely not a strategic move from God's part, or so it seemed at first glance. What would a young Shepherd have to offer his community, let alone his country. How comforting to know that the Lord knows our hearts and has His plans for us. Dear Lord, thank You that Your care more about my heart's attitude toward You than my outward Beauty, Possessions, or Achievements. God's priority is your heart.

Happy Birthday Dad.

I want to pay tribute to my mentor, my friend and my father on his birthday. At an early age, when I was maturing I thought my cognitive ability’s held no bounds. I mean I literally knew it all. Good looks, glamour, popularity, money, women, and fame was all I cherished. But before I could make, any grievous mistakes, and I was in position to do so, my dad pulled me aside and (splained) to me. It changed what could have been a life of crime, drugs and abuse.

He explained what it was like growing up in a black ghetto world. What one could expect to achieve, without wisdom, was little more than becoming a pimp, a drug dealer, a numbers runner or some other deviant character. Someone whose opportunities would be limited to drug abuse, Prison or even death.

My father gave me a vision of a world beyond the streets. A world where the opportunities were available, for anyone. And, with a little effort, one could achieve greatness beyond anything I had known or seen in my neighborhood. He said, “The things in life won’t be perfect or easy”. But with focus and determination, one could achieve miracles beyond your fondest dreams.

As I matured, I realized, “I did not have the world by its’ tail”, or as Scarface said, “this world is mine”.

My dad helped me understand, if you want anything, you have to earn it. The beauty of that is the experience, the mindset, and the people you meet along the way. It builds your character, which builds the relationships, which give the dream a reality. That reality became me.

I won’t lie, I didn’t truly comprehend, all of what he advised, at the time. And, to tell the truth, I was not ready to give up my ghetto fabulous life style. But I remember him saying, “When you seek a path with God, God will help you see what I’m telling you is the true reality of life. I can truthfully say I did not follow all of my dad’s instructions. However somewhere in the deep cognitions of my brain, I remembered to seek a path with God.

I know my dad loved beyond unconditional love. His faith was his belief. Which became my belief.

I am so blessed to have a father who taught me love, compassion and faith. A man who believed in God, family and love. May he and my mom rest in peace. Thank you mom and dad for a life I could not have seen without the both of you. I love you. God bless you. And happy birthday dad.
