Stop the "Imposter" Scam: Using Personal Identifiers
In 2026, AI voice cloning and deepfakes make it easier than ever for a stranger to sound—or even look—exactly like someone you love. If you receive an urgent call or video chat from a "family member" or "friend" asking for money, don't rush to act. Stop, think, and verify.
In this PSA, we define the Personal Identifier—a secret "safe word" or shared memory used exclusively between you and your inner circle to confirm identity during an emergency. Unlike your birthday or your pet's name (which a hacker can find online), a Personal Identifier is a unique, private code that an imposter simply won't know.
How to Use a Personal Identifier:
* The "Secret Code" Method: Agree on a unique word or phrase (like an inside joke or a random object) that must be said before any financial talk happens.
* The "Shared Memory" Question: Ask a question only the real person could answer: "What did we eat for dinner last Tuesday?" or "What’s the name of the neighbor's grumpy cat?"
* The Call-and-Response: Create a trigger phrase. If they say "X," you respond with "Y." If they can't finish the phrase, hang up.
