Thinking about the media landscape? This thought-provoking poster from the Hexagon Center highlights a critical point: content designed to trigger extreme emotional responses, like rage, is often designed for engagement rather than truth.
Before you react or share, take a moment. Slow down and think. Protect yourself and your community from false narratives.

Know the Difference: PII vs. The Personal Identifier 🛡️

In the world of 2026 cybercrime, names and numbers aren't enough to keep you safe. To protect yourself from sophisticated deepfakes and voice cloning, you need to understand the difference between PII (what the world knows about you) and a Personal Identifier (what only your inner circle knows).

This PSA from Hexagon Center breaks down how to use these two concepts to build a wall between your family and potential scammers.

What is PII? (The "What")
Personally Identifiable Information (PII) is data that can be used to distinguish or trace your identity.
* Examples: Your Social Security number, home address, date of birth, or email.
* The Risk: Hackers hunt for PII to "impersonate" you to banks or government agencies. Much of this is unfortunately findable on the dark web or via social media.

What is a Personal Identifier? (The "Who")
In this context, a Personal Identifier is a private "verification" tool. It is a specific piece of information shared only between two people to prove they are who they say they are.
* The Use Case: If someone calls you claiming to be your grandson in trouble, you ask for the Personal Identifier.
* Examples: A family code word ("Blueberry Muffin"), a shared memory ("What did we eat at your graduation?"), or a secret answer that isn't your mother's maiden name.

PII is what you protect FROM the world. A Personal Identifier is what you use to verify YOUR world.

Don't let an AI-cloned voice trick you into sending money. Establish your family's personal identifier today! Like this video to spread the word and subscribe to Hexagon Center for more 2026 security essentials.

Stop the "Imposter" Scam: Using Personal Identifiers

In 2026, AI voice cloning and deepfakes make it easier than ever for a stranger to sound—or even look—exactly like someone you love. If you receive an urgent call or video chat from a "family member" or "friend" asking for money, don't rush to act. Stop, think, and verify.

In this PSA, we define the Personal Identifier—a secret "safe word" or shared memory used exclusively between you and your inner circle to confirm identity during an emergency. Unlike your birthday or your pet's name (which a hacker can find online), a Personal Identifier is a unique, private code that an imposter simply won't know.

How to Use a Personal Identifier:
* The "Secret Code" Method: Agree on a unique word or phrase (like an inside joke or a random object) that must be said before any financial talk happens.
* The "Shared Memory" Question: Ask a question only the real person could answer: "What did we eat for dinner last Tuesday?" or "What’s the name of the neighbor's grumpy cat?"
* The Call-and-Response: Create a trigger phrase. If they say "X," you respond with "Y." If they can't finish the phrase, hang up.

Don't let a scammer use your emotions against you. Establish your family’s Personal Identifier today. Like this video to protect your community, and subscribe to Hexagon Center for more expert tips on outsmarting 2026 cyber-scams.
