Cleaning out an old phone this fall? A few things worth knowing:
Sign out of your accounts before you erase, not after. Otherwise the next owner hits a login screen they cannot pass.
Keep the phone on Wi-Fi during the erase. Activation Lock clears on Apple's servers, not on the device.
A reset does not delete your cloud photos, and it does not cancel subscriptions. Those live with your account.
A slow phone usually does not need a reset. Check your storage and battery health first.
Do not put it in the household recycling bin. Use an electronics drop-off, your waste company's transfer station, or Apple's trade-in program.

There is an old phone somewhere in your house. A drawer, a desk, a box in the garage. And the reason it is still sitting there instead of sold or donated is that you are not quite sure how to safely hand it to a stranger.
That instinct is right. A factory reset is what makes it safe, but there is one step people skip.
Sign out of your accounts first, then erase. Never the other way around. Apple and Google both tie the phone to your account as anti-theft protection, and the phone cannot tell the difference between a thief and your nephew. Wipe it while it is still signed in and the next person gets a login screen they can never pass.

A few practical ways to share photos with family without the usual mess:
Count first. One or two pictures, text them. Past five or six, make an album and send one link.
Know why texted photos look bad. When there is an Android phone in the thread, the photos get compressed on the way. Nothing is broken.
Use the plain web link, not the app invitation. Anyone can open it in a browser with no account. Just remember that anyone holding the link can see the photos.
Keep using the same album. Add more later and everyone who has the link sees them.
For the relative who will not use a screen, order prints, or give a smart photo frame.

You get back from a trip with a phone full of good pictures, so you select a big batch and text them to the family. Seems reasonable.
Then your brother mentions his phone buzzed 40 times during a meeting. Your sister says they all came through blurry. And your mom calls to ask how to save the one of the cake.
Here is the rule that fixes most of it. One or two photos, text them. Past five or six, send a link instead.
Both Apple and Google Photos let you put pictures in an album and create a plain web link. Your relatives tap it, the photos come up big and sharp, and there is nothing to install and no account to create.

A few things worth knowing about your photos before the holiday picture season starts:
Synced is not the same as backed up. If deleting a photo on your phone removes it everywhere else, that is sync doing its job, not a safety net.
The free plans are small on purpose. Apple gives you 5 GB. Google gives you 15 GB but shares it with Gmail and Drive. Amazon gives you 5 GB.
If you pay for Prime, you already have unlimited full-resolution photo storage on Amazon Photos. Video is the catch, and it is capped.
Pick one service, not two or three. Half-using several is the hardest mess to clean up later.
Then verify it. Open your photos on something that is not your phone.

Somewhere on your phone there is a photo you would be genuinely sad to lose. A first day of school. The last picture of a parent, or a dog, or a house you do not live in anymore.
Here is the question almost nobody can answer: where is the second copy?
Most of us believe we are backed up. Usually we are synced, and those are not the same thing. Syncing keeps your phone and a service showing a matching set, but it runs in both directions. Delete a photo on your phone and it disappears everywhere else too. That is a matching set, not a safety net.
That one distinction clears up almost everything else about photo storage, including which service you should actually be paying for.

Three smart TV privacy settings worth finding when you have ten minutes:
Turn off ACR or viewing data on the TV itself. Look under Privacy, Terms, or General for viewing information services, Live Plus, smart interactivity, or content recognition.
On each streaming stick or box, open Privacy settings, limit ad tracking, and reset the advertising ID. Ads will not disappear. They usually just get less personally tailored.
If you do not use voice search on the remote, turn off voice recognition or always-listening features.
Search the web for your brand and model plus "turn off ACR" if the menu is buried. You will almost always find specific steps.

You turn on the TV to relax, and while you watch, a lot of smart TVs are quietly taking notes on what is on the screen.
It is not a camera. It is something called Automatic Content Recognition, usually turned on by default, and brands rarely put that exact phrase in the menus. They use friendlier names instead.
The same kind of tracking shows up on streaming sticks too: Fire TV, Roku, even Apple TV to varying degrees. That data often ends up fueling ads that follow you from the living room to your phone.
You do not need to throw the TV out. In about ten minutes you can shut off the loudest data faucets if you know where to look.

A few things about group texts that make them a lot less confusing once you know them:
Blue bubbles mean everyone is on Apple's iMessage. Add one Android phone and the whole thread changes for everyone, not just that one person.
Green does not automatically mean "insecure" anymore. With iOS 26.5, iPhone-to-Android texts can be end-to-end encrypted when everyone is on current software. Look for the little lock icon.
You do not have to leave a noisy group to get peace. On iPhone, open the group, tap the names at the top, and turn on Hide Alerts. On Android, open the chat and choose Mute.
