Many customers have misconceptions about the power handling or “wattage” of speakers. It is marketing at work, no fault of theirs. For those customers:

Common Misconceptions:

• "More Watts = More Volume": Louder sound depends on sensitivity (dB per watt), not power consumption. A 100W speaker is not necessarily louder than a 50W speaker.

• "Higher Watts = Better Sound": Wattage ratings only show the maximum power a speaker can handle without damage; they do not indicate audio quality or fidelity.

• "My Speaker Needs 200 Watts, So I Need a 200-Watt Amp": Speakers only need to handle the power used during normal listening; most of the time, less than 10 watts is used, and "headroom" (extra power) is rarely fully utilized.

• "More Power Cannot Damage Speakers": Using too little power can cause clipping, which may burn out tweeters more easily than a high-powered, clean amplifier.

• "Peak Power is the True Rating": Peak or "music" power is often a marketing term. RMS (Root Mean Square) wattage is the real measure of continuous power a speaker can handle.
