🌺INTERNATIONAL DAY OF THE GIRL CHILD 2026: LET HER GROW, NOT SUFFER.
Every girl deserves a childhood filled with love, education, safety, and the freedom to dream. No girl should have to exchange her childhood for marriage or motherhood before she is physically and emotionally ready.
EARLY CHILD MARRIAGE: A CHILD SHOULD NEVER BE FORCED TO BECOME A WIFE.
When a girl is married too early, she may be exposed to pregnancy and childbirth before her body and mind are ready. Instead of enjoying her childhood, she may face serious health risks, interrupted education, isolation, and a future shaped by decisions she was too young to make.
OBSTETRIC FISTULA: A HIDDEN CONSEQUENCE WE MUST TALK ABOUT.
Obstetric fistula is a serious childbirth injury that can occur when prolonged, obstructed labour damages the tissues between the birth canal and the bladder or re**um. It can cause uncontrollable leakage of urine or faeces, leaving survivors vulnerable to stigma, rejection, and social isolation.
Although fistula can affect women of different ages, pregnancy at a very young age can increase the risk of complications during childbirth. The good news is that obstetric fistula is often preventable, and treatment is available for many survivors.
THE TRAUMA: WOUNDS THAT ARE NOT ALWAYS VISIBLE.
A girl forced into marriage may experience fear, anxiety, depression, loss of self-worth, and the pain of losing her childhood. The trauma may continue long after the marriage ends. She needs compassion, protection, access to education, and professional support, not blame, shame, or silence.
WHAT CAN WE DO?
1. Keep girls in school and support their dreams.
2. Speak out against child marriage and sexual abuse.
3. Educate families about the health risks of early pregnancy.
4. Ensure access to quality healthcare and timely emergency obstetric care.
5. Support survivors of fistula and trauma with dignity and compassion.
6. Give every girl the freedom to grow, learn, and make informed decisions about her future.
A GIRL CHILD IS NOT A BRIDE. HER CHILDHOOD IS NOT A BURDEN. HER FUTURE IS NOT OURS TO TAKE AWAY.
This International Day of the Girl Child, let us move beyond celebrating girls to protecting their rights, safeguarding their health, and creating a world where every girl can thrive.
LET GIRLS GROW. END CHILD MARRIAGE. PREVENT OBSTETRIC FISTULA. HEAL THE TRAUMA. PROTECT HER FUTURE.
