Hey San Antonio folks its Alamo ranch pc repair here!

Today we wanted to give a bit of info today to keep you informed on your right to repair. One of our techs had a laptop come in that we weren't able to fix and realized that some of the info that we have may not be common knowledge and wanted to share.

Imagine your desktop has important files that you need for work, and your laptop has all the photos of your family vacation on it. Both devices went down simultaneously and you don't know why. The local repair tech says both the devices have the same problem, the processor went out. He's willing Fix your desktop, but not your laptop.

You might wonder, 'if he knows the issue, why cant he fix both, after all they're the same component.'

In the second image, we have a standard desktop motherboard, the large black rectangle in the center is the slot for the processor. In the third, a laptop motherboard with the small red circle being the processor. The desktop processor is easily accessible and fairly easy to swap out if you are careful. This laptop processor however, is covered by a heatsink that is soldered onto the device. Repairs of this nature are incredibly risky on laptops as you are just as likely to damage the device as you are to complete the repair..

The majority of the time desktops use standardized parts that can be purchased and replaced. Laptops however use custom motherboards, proprietary connectors, and many manufacturer specific components. On top of that, very thin laptops will have most of these components integrated into the motherboard itself. While not impossible to fix, physical repairs on laptops are often limited to things like ram, hard-drive and screen replacements.

These hard to swap and soldered components are made this way due to consumer's wish for an ever smaller and portable form factor for laptops. While we don't expect that norm to change, some people like the folks at are actively working to give back your control over your laptop.

Here at if you have a desktop or laptop that you think could use a repair, give us a call and we will help to the best of our ability!

Hey there folks.

With some luck, today should be the last day of our heavy rain. We hope everyone is safe and empathize with those affected by the flooding. We wanted to take the time today to talk about phone and email scams that may follow our recent flood and inclement weather.

If you or someone you know has been affected by flooding here are some good practices to be aware of if you are contacted by anyone claiming to offer flooding insurance or disaster relief.

If you receive a phonecall regarding disaster assistance or grants from FEMA, you must have previously applied for it. They will not pro-actively call you unless you are pre-registered or have contacted them first. Some of these scammers will ask for payment in order to process your 'grant'. Real FEMA employees will never ask for payment for disaster assistance, home inspections, or help with filling out applications. Legitimate entities will also never ask for banking details or your social security number so be cautious when handing out sensitive information.

Lastly we want to make it clear that scammers can 'spoof' the identity of the caller. They may attempt to contact you from what appears to be a legitimate line and your caller ID may even state that it is an official line from one of these companies. We recommend if you receive any of these calls, it is best practice to hang-up and call the direct hotline of said entity if you have business with them.

We hope everyone can stay safe using some of these practices and if you think your data has been compromised please contact your financial institution right away. If you would like help safeguarding yourself in the future please consider us as resource for you to use we are always a call away.

Hey Folks,
We all know the storming and flooding is going on right now, we are getting more and more calls of people's devices going down and not coming back up. During periods like this your computers and electronics are at a higher risk to power surges and data loss and the team over here at Alamo Ranch Pc Repair wanted to share some best practices.

We highly recommend when not actively using your device to fully power it off and to remove it from the outlet you were using.

***JUST BECAUSE IT IS IN A SURGE PROTECTOR, YOU ARE NOT NECESSARILY SAFE FROM DIRECT STRIKES***

Surge protectors are great for minor power spikes which can happen for a wide variety of reasons, and its always better to have one if possible. However, electricity can be unpredictable. Your meter outside your house won't do anything to protect your home from a surge and if the surge is secondary, neither will a transformer. Play it safe if you know its getting bad out there and unplug important devices.

Our final tip of today is to backup your data. If its an excel sheet, word document, or powerpoint, ensure that you have the AutoSave function enabled through your onedrive so your work continuously backs-up as you type. If you haven't manually backed up your computer, windows and apple have built in backup tools. Hit your windows key and type 'backup'. If you are on an apple device navigate to 'time machine'.

Lastly if you have any devices that won't boot or need help after the storm is over give us a call or visit our website alamoranchpcrepair.com and we will be happy to help!
