When someone we love dies, their pets feel it too.
The dog who still waits by the door. The cat who curls into an empty chair. They are grieving alongside the family, and they need a plan.
A few things that help in the first weeks:
Check the will and any letters left behind. Many people name a caretaker for their pets, and that wish matters.
Keep the routine steady. Same food, same walks, same bedtime. Familiarity is comfort right now.
Gather their records. Vet history, medications, microchip number, the quirks only the family knows.
Slow down on rehoming. Decisions made in the first month rarely hold. Let the dust settle before anything permanent.
If no one in the family can take them in, breed-specific rescues and local shelters often have pet retention programs designed for exactly this moment.
Pets are part of the estate, but they are also part of the story. They remember the people they loved. They deserve a soft landing too.
