A Pinellas County resident nearly lost $300,000 after scammers impersonated the Sheriff’s Office, claimed he had a warrant for missing jury duty, and even emailed him a convincing fake warrant containing his real information. The scammers created fear and urgency, kept him on the phone, told him not to speak with anyone, and directed him to move money and prepare a wire transfer.

Protect yourself by never trusting the caller ID, email, badge number, or documents sent by someone who contacts you unexpectedly. Hang up and independently call the law enforcement agency using the phone number listed on its official website, and remember that legitimate law enforcement agencies will not demand payment through wire transfers, Zelle, gift cards, or cryptocurrency.

Cybercriminals are increasingly turning trusted browser extensions into attack tools, with malicious Chrome and Edge extensions caught stealing cryptocurrency, login credentials, session tokens, browser history, and other sensitive information, sometimes after legitimate extensions were purchased and later weaponized through automatic updates. This attack is especially dangerous because employees may believe an extension is safe simply because it came from an official browser store.
