The first step is to open up a little about yourself. Friendships are characterized by intimacy. True friends know about each other’s values, struggles, goals, and interests. So, try sharing something a little bit more personal than you would normally. You don’t have to reveal your most closely-held secret, just something a little more revealing than talking about the weather and see how the other person responds.

Our relationships will bounce back better and stronger, it will help to be patient and understanding of the people around us who are finally emerging from their homes, perhaps more slowly than we are, perhaps with more anxiety than they had before.

Try to understand a situation from your friend’s point of view. Ask questions to get a sense of the problem or issue, but the main thing is to listen to them. You can make a real difference to how someone is feeling just by letting them know how important they are to you. Being interested in what they’re going through shows you care, and that you plan to stick around no matter what’s going on.

Once you get past the initial infatuation, however, and the relationship begins to blossom, you truly begin to learn where the relationship is headed, and a deep foundation of trust can begin to develop or diffuse. To be truly happy in a relationship, both individuals involved must be able to trust each other.

Communication is the cornerstone of healthy, successful relationships. If you want to resolve relationship conflict without hurting your partner, avoid yelling and name-calling. Maintain eye contact as you talk, and eliminate distractions. Having empathy is essential, when you empathize with your spouse, you are giving them your attention, bridging the divide in your argument, and promoting compassion.

Keep the conversation going with small talk. Don’t say something that’s obviously provocative and avoid heavy subjects such as politics or religion. Stick to light subjects like the weather, surroundings, and anything you have in common. It’s okay to make mistakes, it’s part of being human. Even our weaknesses can bring us closer to others. If you can cheerfully accept your awkwardness and imperfections, you’ll likely find that others will, too.

New insights are beginning to emerge showing how women’s well-being has been hampered by gender disparities. The problem with the trust gap is that doctors are not getting the feedback they need to see that this is a widespread problem. There’s power in women seeing that their experiences are similar, that's why women should share and expose more what happens with them.

Banter is important. It can be a way to joke around with your mates, make everyone feel comfortable and create a great mood. The difference between banter and bullying isn’t always clear-cut.
Sometimes, what’s intended to be banter could actually be hurtful to the other person. It isn’t always obvious since many people might choose to ignore it or laugh it off. If your mates have crossed the line, speak up. If they’re true mates, they’ll listen to you seriously when you speak up.

They can help with meal prep and household cleaning. Use non-controlling, non-directive language. For example, ask questions instead of telling them what to do. My all-time favorite question is “What’s your plan?” As in: “What’s your plan for getting some exercise today?” This makes it clear that they are still in control of their own behavior, and it helps put them in touch with their own motivations and intentions.

If the last time you had an amazing time without your partner was a long time ago, you might need more social connections outside your relationship. Are you spending enough time with your friends? When both people in a relationship have a strong support network, it can take some of the pressure off their partner to be the only source of care, strength and encouragement.
