You may already have a website, but is it earning at its full potential?

If you had to choose between some income and more income, which would you choose? That's something Julie Adams from Orlando considered. Binge snacking started without ever realizing it, probably as a coping mechanism for the stress of work.

By the time I got home to my family, who I dearly love, I didn't have the energy to truly be present every night.

It's a different story now. I'm not stressed out and overeating to cope with it. I don't have an angry commute. In fact, driving isn't a problem now because there's no rush to get where I'm going.

I'm able to enjoy the time I spent with my wife and daughter.

The only problem with losing so much weight is that I need new clothes because the old ones literally fall off.

Those are benefits I didn't expect when I started my own home-based business and I don't think I could ever go back to the lower quality of life I had working to support someone else's business.

Creating a business website can seem intimidating. I hear from lots of people who say they're worried about the tech. However, outsourcing web development has a couple of problems for home-based businesses.

1: It's expensive
For a basic business website, often referred to as a "brochure" website, a good web developer charges about $6000 or more. That's just for a site with four basic pages. Then there are monthly maintenance costs, because most web developers offer a "website as a service".

That means they host the site on servers they control, use the plugins they prefer, and pay for those costs. You get full access to your site, which is yours, but those monthly costs run about $120 or more.

For most people starting up a small business, these costs aren't in line with what they're prepared to spend. They're trivial compared to opening up a brick & mortar business, but most folks working from home are bootstrapping their business, not trying to get a bank loan.

2: Web Developers Do What You Ask
There are tons of people pitching themselves as web developers because they know how to slap together a website. They'll do what you ask.

The problem comes when you don't know what to request for your site. You can end up with a beautiful website, but it's not beauty that gets people to spend money.

Look at Amazon products. It's a hot mess visually, but they rake in money like crazy.

Most web developers are contractors, not consultants. They do what you ask, but you have to know what to ask.

Here's what most web developers don't want you to know about creating a website.

It's not that hard!

They love customers who are intimidated by the tech because those folks are easy money. In fact, they have different intimidation techniques to overcome objections. One of them is the "WordPress Operations Manual (WOM)".

The WOM is for customers who don't want to pay for monthly maintenance. So the developers give them this manual about all the things that they have to do just to keep their WordPress site running.

It's an intimidating book designed to get customers to say that they don't have time for it, don't have the desire to do the work. Here, TAKE MY MONEY and keep my site running.

Meanwhile, developers have a site that does all the work with pushbutton ease and keeps raking in recurring revenue.

The truth is that you can use the same tools for free, but the developers don't tell you about that.

The other truth is that you don't have to be a coder to create a website these days. I haven't written a program since the early 90s and that suits me just fine.

FYI, I would not have thought about joining sight unseen if not for your youtube’s and the fact that you thoughtfully responded to a question.

I am hesitant to join any memberships or subscribe to anything else because I did belong to a very good membership for many years. Unfortunately, after a month or two I just failed to utilize it. I think we have way too many resources and distractions that it is hard to utilize what you already have.

Your membership comes at a good time. My family and I are launching a site for gifted elementary kids and their parents next week. It has probably been over 10 years in the making. Too many shiny objects and just difficult to understand how to deliver the content and hooking up all the related technology. Plus, we really don’t have a marketing plan other than word of mouth.

In most cases, perfectionism is not a productive trait to have. This time we are launching whether we are ready or not. I think the answer there is I don’t think you are ever ready. You go with good enough and adjust from there.

It goes back to the old quote, “No Plan Survives First Contact With the Enemy”. I think that is true with any business. You can plan and plan but, you don’t really know what people want until you start getting paying customers.
