The Limited user account cannot be used to install any programs. But can still be used to surf the web and download music and such. It is possible that music files might include a virus. But if you are using the Limited account the virus might not be able to install itself. If you need to install programs, switch to the main computer Administrator account.

Use an Internet Only user account. When a virus is downloaded in most cases it checks that user account for computer Administrator rights. If that account has those rights, the virus can install itself. You can create a new Limited Windows user account via the control pane

Watch out for banner ads that claim they can speed you computer up or free scan. This could be a virus. Do a little research first.

If this happens to your computer, you should close Windows and shut it down. The computer will need service to remove the virus. Some customers have tried installing anti-virus software after the computer is infected. This rarely works because the virus will block programs from being installed. This just compounds the problem.

In most cases you can’t use the Internet. The infamous “page can’t be displayed” or something similar pops up. Then a dialog box might come appear that asks you if you want to activate the software. If you click yes all of a sudden the Internet starts working and you end up on a web page asking you for your credit card information. Don’t be fooled by this. The goal is to steal your money and credit card information.

Some of the names are AntiVirus (2007, 2008, 2009, and 2010), MS-Antispyware, XP AntiVirus (2007, 2008, 2009, and 2010), Home Antivirus 2010, SpyWareGuard, Malware Cleaner, Extra Antivirus, AV AntiSpyware, SpywareProtect2010, WinPC Defender and many more. They produce fake alerts such as “Windows security alert” or your computer is infected by x amount of viruses.

PC Doctors Consumer Computer Repair Services has seen an increase in Windows virus related problems over the past few months. We are seeing lots of so called “Rouge Programs”. They use an “antivirus” in their name in order to trick us into thinking it is a legitimate antivirus program. When in truth it is the virus.
