There is always something to be thankful for. Some days, you just have to look a little harder than others.

This weekend was a busy one. I applied graphics to four trucks. Three required removing existing graphics and applying new ones, while the fourth was a straightforward application. Between the work, the schedules, and trying to make everything come together, it was a reminder of just how much goes on behind the scenes of a small business.

And yes, trying to apply vinyl graphics in 35 MPH Kansas winds is an experience all its own! 😂

But as I look back on the weekend, what stands out the most isn’t the work. It’s the people.

I’m incredibly thankful for the people who offer me shop space, work around my hectic schedule, accommodate installation and removal times, and give me the patience and understanding I sometimes need to get everything done.

Some of you have been incredibly gracious with your time and your expectations. You communicate with me, understand that life and work don’t always go according to plan, and trust me to make things right without constantly looking over my shoulder.

You may never fully realize how much that means to me.

As a one-person operation, there is only so much of me to go around. I’m balancing my regular job, my business, customer projects, and everything else life throws my way. Sometimes things take longer than I’d like, and I know waiting isn’t always easy.

Please understand that I’m never taking your patience or your trust for granted. If anything, it makes me work that much harder to deliver something you’re proud to put your name on.

Lately, I’ve been fortunate to see more interest in my work and take on some larger projects. I’m genuinely thankful for every opportunity. At the same time, I’m realizing that growth brings new challenges, and I’m going to need dedicated shop space in the not-too-distant future. Some projects simply aren’t practical to complete outdoors, especially when Kansas decides to remind us who’s really in charge of the weather.

Behind the scenes, I’m continually investing in equipment, learning about new products and technology, and communicating with manufacturers, vendors, sales representatives, and software specialists. I want to keep learning, improving, and offering the best products and service I possibly can.

I may not have a big crew or a fancy facility, but I have something I value just as much: people who believe in what I do and trust me to do it right.

I know that trust is earned, not given, and I never want to lose sight of that.

To everyone who supports my business, refers someone my way, offers a helping hand, or simply gives me a little extra grace when things get hectic, thank you.

You’re helping me build something that means a great deal to me, and I don’t take a single bit of it for granted.

Sometimes, we get so caught up in what needs to be done next that we forget to appreciate the people who help us get there.

Today, I’m choosing to do just that.

Thank you for your patience. Thank you for your trust. And thank you for being part of this journey. ❤️

Just another day in the sign shop printing my favorite media…. Banners!

If I had to pick one media to print on, it’d be banners banners and more banners.

They are inexpensive and are accessible to nearly everyone. There aren’t very many people who can’t afford a banner.

Allowing someone to have access to quality affordable full color digital printing is important to me.

But most importantly, it allows me to be creative.

People often ask what sets me apart from every other Sign shop in the country?

After all, we do the same things, right?

98% of what I do is printed or produced in house. There are a few things that are not, but it’s usually those one of a kind or once a year items that I cannot justify buying $1200 material for a $200 job…

I have a niche. I remember what it was like to start my own business and to not have someone help me. I remember the fear. I remember the aggravation. I remember the frustration. It’s a very cold, hopeless and lonely feeling.

Any business will tell you that if they’re not profitable, they will not survive.

While this is true, I find ways to mitigate your upfront starting costs. Maybe we print part of a project and utilize stencil vinyl for the other part of it. Maybe we use a different material, maybe we compromise on the intricacy of the design. Maybe we simply just take a step back and find a way to make it work.

Maybe that means instead of printing you a hard sign that’s going to cost you several thousand dollars, we print you a couple of large banners to get you going and then once you get up and going we upgrade you to a sign. A small compromise, but it still serves the same purpose..

As of lately, I have found myself helping those with new business startup. I think there’s a lot of people out there who see those kind of opportunities as “ cash cows.” However I do not.

I understand there’s a lot of startup and a lot of expense but you still need to look professional. You still need your equipment to be presentable. You still need your building to be warm welcoming and friendly.

Your signage reflects the kind of business you operate. There are ways other than taking you to the cleaners to making that happen.

Sometimes it’s fun and I mean literally it’s something I enjoy doing. Finding a simple and cost-effective way to getting you from Point A to Point B.

As I told someone recently, it costs just as much to run a half —- project through the printer as it does a good one so why not make it good?

I’m not the WM Sign Department and I’m not going to have my clients running up and down the streets with half —- decals…

SURPRISE!

Sometimes we spend so much time taking care of other people we forget to take care of ourselves.

Sometimes you just need to step back and do something for yourself. Even if it’s something small.

I’m not joking when I tell you that I’ve applied vinyl on a variety of substrates

This is no different. And it could not have turned out any better..

It’s the first of its kind and I’m not quite sure how it’s going to work. It’s mine so if it doesn’t work, no harm no foul at least I’ll know.

I wasn’t really crazy about putting the logo back on however the factory cut out some pretty large sized holes, and I was left no choice, but to put the logo back on, but even at that the placement could not have been more perfect. I didn’t even plan for it to be this way.

Honestly, I just size the lid and designed it accordingly, never even did what I normally do.

Here’s a little something I did for myself..

It seems like we spend all of our time, taking care of other people. Writing estimates, answering the phone, drawing up, countless proofs, removing and installing graphics along with the final billing and paperwork phase.

You have to put something in the box before you can take something out. Isn’t it funny that we buy this equipment and very seldom do we ever do anything for ourselves?

So here it is. This is something that I rendered for my own use. It will be put on a very unique and off-the-wall application…

Any guesses? You might be surprised.
