☀️ Summer is here.

For many businesses, June brings a natural slowdown as clients take vacations and new projects pause for a bit.

That makes it a great time to take a step back and make sure your business is ready for the second half of the year.

A few questions worth asking:

✅ Are your backups working?
✅ Is your email secure?
✅ Are your systems up to date?
✅ Is your business prepared for its busy season?

Even if you're already working with an IT provider, a second set of eyes can sometimes uncover gaps or simply provide peace of mind that everything is set up correctly.

A little time invested now can help you focus on growing your business with confidence later.

🔐 Password Security

Quick Tip:

If your team shares passwords through email or text messages...

you've already got a security gap.

Passwords should be:
✔ Unique
✔ Securely stored
✔ Shared through a password manager

Not:
❌ Email
❌ Text message
❌ Sticky note
❌ Spreadsheet

Password managers make it easy to securely store and share credentials without exposing the actual password.

A small change that can make a big difference.

Before a shift, firefighters check their gear.

SCBA. PPE. Tools. Apparatus.

Police officers do the same with their duty gear, radios, body armor, and equipment.

Why?

Because the worst time to discover something isn't working is when you need it most.

The same is true in business.

Too often, companies discover their backup wasn't working, their email wasn't protected, or their recovery plan didn't exist only after a problem occurs.

Preparation isn't always exciting, but it matters.

Whether you're protecting a building or protecting a business, being ready before the emergency is always better than reacting during one.

Yesterday I had the opportunity to speak with a local group of business owners about cybersecurity.

One thing that stood out to me was that most people have heard terms like "hacking," "ransomware," "phishing," and "MFA."

But unless you've worked in the field or been the victim of an incident, it's often hard to connect those terms to what actually happens in the real world.

One analogy seemed to really resonate:

Many people think cyberattacks happen because someone breaks in.

Like kicking down your front door or climbing through an unlocked window.

But many of today's attacks look more like someone knocking on the door while your teenager is home alone, introducing themselves as the friendly repairman, and being invited inside.

That's why awareness matters so much.

I ended with a question for the group:

"Does a cyber insurance company care more about your firewall or your MFA?"

Most guessed firewall.

The answer is MFA.

Why? Because compromised credentials are involved in a huge percentage of cybersecurity incidents.

In many cases, the biggest risk isn't someone breaking in.

It's someone being let in.

Cybersecurity isn't just about technology. It's about awareness.

📧 Email Security: Businesses spend years earning trust. A compromised or spoofed email account can put that trust at risk in minutes.

One of the most common cybersecurity issues I see with small businesses is email compromise and email spoofing.

The danger isn't just to your email account.

It's the impact on your customers, prospects, partners, and reputation when someone receives a fraudulent email that appears to come from you.

Protecting your email starts with a few simple steps:
🔒 Strong passwords
🔒 A password manager
🔒 Multi-factor authentication (MFA)
🔒 Proper email security settings like SPF, DKIM, and DMARC

Not sure if your business is properly protected?

Feel free to reach out. We're happy to help.

Spent the day at the HIA-LI 38th Annual Trade Show & Conference at The Suffolk Credit Union Arena, with Armando D'Accordo and Robert Schlener of CMIT Solutions of South Nassau and Harun Hassouni of CMIT Solutions of North Nassau.

Lots of valuable conversations. Always great hearing what is top of mind directly from local business owners. And of course, amazing seeing so many familiar faces from the community.

One year ago today, we lost our dog, Lacey. We adopted her from a local rescue agency, Last Chance Animal Rescue, in early 2013. The moment we saw her picture posted on their website, we knew she was meant for us.

She was my first dog, and for our family, she was so much more than “just a pet.” She was a huge part of our lives. And honestly, a huge part of my work life too.

For more than 8 years, I worked from home with her by my side almost every day. And if you worked with me during that time, there’s a very good chance you heard her barking on a Zoom call anytime an Amazon, UPS, or FedEx truck dared to drive through the neighborhood.

She definitely made her presence known.

What I didn’t fully appreciate at the time was just how much pets become part of our routines, our workdays, and our lives. And when they’re gone, there’s a void that’s hard to explain until you experience it yourself.

Today, my wife, kids, and I all spent time remembering her in our own ways...reflecting on a lot of great photos and memories.

For those of you who have had pets that were a big part of your daily life or work routine, feel free to share a picture or memory of them in the comments - in memory of them, and in memory of Lacey.

🔄 Software Updates

Quick Tip:

That “Update Later” button?

That’s how vulnerabilities stick around.

Delaying updates to your computer, browser, or apps may seem harmless, but outdated software is one of the easiest ways attackers gain access to systems.

Those updates are there for a reason.

AI is changing cybersecurity on both sides of the battlefield.

Cybercriminals are now using AI to:
• Create more convincing phishing emails
• Impersonate employees and executives
• Move faster and scale attacks more efficiently

At the same time, businesses are leveraging AI to detect threats earlier and respond faster than ever before.

That’s why understanding this shift matters for businesses of every size.

Looking forward to this upcoming webinar from CMIT Solutions and Barracuda Networks:
“Defeat the New Wave of AI-Powered Cyberattacks”

If cybersecurity and AI are on your radar, this should be a valuable session.

Cyberattacks today are no longer just targeting technology. They are targeting businesses. 🛑

Criminals use AI to move faster, impersonate employees, break into email accounts, and access sensitive data. At the same time, businesses are using AI to detect threats earlier and respond before damage occurs. 🤖

Join us for the webinar, Defeat the New Wave of AI-Powered Cyberattacks, featuring Selby Philipose of Barracuda Networks and Stuart Hentschel of CMIT Solutions, LLC.

In this session, we’ll explore how cybercriminals are using AI to launch smarter attacks, how businesses are using AI to detect threats earlier, and why human oversight still plays a critical role in cybersecurity.
