This week, DefendEdge's Cyber Threat Intelligence (CTI) Department analyzed Helix, an emerging data-extortion group that uses social engineering and identity-based attacks to compromise corporate environments, steal sensitive information, and extort victims for financial gain.
Helix has been observed using vishing and device-code phishing to compromise employee accounts. After gaining access, the group can register attacker-controlled MFA authenticators to maintain persistence before enumerating SharePoint environments and using automated methods to bulk-download sensitive corporate data.
In a recent incident, Helix claimed responsibility for compromising Uber Freight and stealing nearly one million files. Uber Freight confirmed unauthorized access to portions of its systems and repositories but did not confirm Helix's claims regarding the scope or authenticity of the allegedly stolen data.
Helix's activity highlights the growing threat of identity-focused attacks that can bypass traditional malware-based defenses by exploiting legitimate authentication processes and cloud services.
