Scammers are getting more creative every year. Please share to help protect our seniors!

❌ Common Medicare Scams:

1️⃣ “New Medicare Card” Scam
Scammers claim Medicare is issuing a new card and ask for your Social Security number to verify your identity.
➡️ FACT: Medicare will never call you to issue a new card or ask for personal info.

2️⃣ Genetic Testing / COVID Test Scams
You may get calls offering “free” DNA tests, cancer screenings, or unlimited COVID tests.
➡️ They bill Medicare fraudulently and steal your information.

3️⃣ Fake Medical Equipment Offers
They claim you’re eligible for braces, wheelchairs, or other equipment at no cost.
➡️ IF YOU DIDN’T REQUEST IT, IT’S A SCAM.

4️⃣ Fake Medicare Representatives
Scammers pretend to be Medicare or your insurance plan and push for your Medicare number.
➡️ Medicare NEVER calls to ask for your Medicare number.

5️⃣ Threats to Cut Off Coverage
If someone says your benefits will be canceled unless you “verify” personal info—
➡️ It’s 100% a scam. Medicare does not make threats.

✅ How to Protect Yourself

ALL unsolicited calls from Medicare are SCAMS! They will call incessantly from spoofed phone numbers and they are all foreigners. DO NOT GIVE THEM ANY INFORMATION, at least information that is true. Be like me and tell them your name is Patrick Mahomes or Donald Trump and that you are 71 years old. I have actually started getting calls requesting to talk to Patrick Mahomes or Donald Trump after I started doing this!

More of this needs to happen. I suspect they weren't bribing the proper officials, otherwise it probably would have been given a free pass, especially in China.

A court in China has sentenced 11 people to death for their roles in a billion-dollar family-run criminal empire built on online scam and gambling operations in a remote border region of Myanmar, and for the deaths of workers who tried to escape.

I probably get more than 100 scam requests per WEEK! The problem is definitely out of control and it doesn't seem like much is being done to slow them down. I really let the phone scammers who call me have it with vile insults in their culture. It seems they do eventually take you off the list if you do this enough.

Americans face about 100 scam attempts each month, according to data, more than any other country in the survey. The next most-scammed country is the United Kingdom.

More of this needs to happen if you ask me. These scams are so common and one must constantly remain vigilant about them. The calls, text messages, e-mails, targeting via social media never stop. So many people do not seem to care and just accept that they are going to get ripped off online. This does not have to happen. Also, those who fall for them are funding crimes against humanity. Glad China is finally doing something but I suspect the family would have gotten away with this had they bribed the proper officials.

The Ming family ran “scam parks” from a Myanmar town near the Chinese border that fueled billion-dollar fraud and other crimes, where those who tried to escape were beaten or killed.

The scams mentioned in this article are nothing new and I feel it should have been headline news on Fox and all other major news outlets long ago. The amount of cybercrime and money lost seems to be the real elephant in the room that no one is willing to talk about. Scams are one of the biggest concerns right now for those using the internet and show no signs of slowing down.

Senior citizens are especially targeted but recent stories about AI s*x bots targeting children on Facebook and other Meta platforms shows no one is immune. The tech support scams described are very common so DO NOT CALL any number that randomly pops up on your computer or provide information to unsolicited callers. Also, making sure you are on a legitimate company site is also important when seeking help. If unsure, only use support methods/phone numbers listed in product literature such as a manual, the product carton or packaging, or a billing statement. Searching for support online will bring up many more scam sites imitating real companies, making it hard for non-technical people to figure out what is real or not.

The scammers also like to collect personal information you might post on social media. This can include hobbies such as items you might collect as mentioned in the article about the Corvettes. This is one reason I say that the less information you post on social media, the better. The platforms have become a cesspit of scammers and other criminals, making them much more dangerous and predatory than people realize.

Be aware that scammers impersonate your bank and government agencies such as Social Security, Medicare, IRS, and FBI. Anyone wanting you to transfer your money/savings into a different account for supposed "safekeeping" or to verify your money was not used for criminal purposes is a scammer.

Keep in mind if your bank, friends, family, or anyone else tells you something is a scam, it likely is. Also note that many scammers will tell you not to inform your bank or another financial institution you are talking with someone else. This is a huge red flag you are being targeted with a scam.

The FBI is warning about a scam that it says has wiped out entire life savings and retirement accounts, leaving seniors devastated.

I have been getting a dozen or more calls a day for the last week or so. in regards to cell phone repair. Apparently everyone who provides this service has either gone out of business or no longer offers the service in the Rolla and surrounding area. It became obvious several years ago that it wasn't economical for the independent shop to repair cell phones economically. While cheap aftermarket parts can lower the cost, they often leave the end user frustrated with poor response or the need for repeated repairs. I have found that the phone manufacturer often provides a faster and better repair option at a lower cost repair than I can even source the parts for. Their stores and repair facilities include costly machines that can do work in minutes that would take me hours. Another option is to trade in phones. Many cell phone carriers offer the trade in of broken phones although their value may be decreased depending on the damage.

I am assuming that others began to realize the drawbacks to providing this service and that is the reason it is not available locally.

A1 Tech does not provide physical hardware repairs for cell phones. That being said, if you need a phone setup and data transferred, that is something that can be done.

I have not been posting much on Facebook lately. The platform seems to have been completely taken over by scammers and I feel it is not ideal to promote my business alongside thousands of cybercriminals who are only out there to rip you off. That being said, the more people who know my services do not include physical hardware repairs for cell phones, the better.

**Important Alert to the Community**

We want everyone to be aware of ongoing scams targeting innocent victims. Recently, individuals posing as FEMA employees have been falsely claiming that there has been a disaster declaration and are asking for personal information.

**Please remember:** Do not provide any personal information to these scammers! Always verify the identity of anyone requesting sensitive information. Stay vigilant and protect yourself and your loved ones!

Unfortunately the Rolla area was hit by a tornado, hail, and high winds. My internet and phone were down early in the day. Local radio stations are/were down. I have spent most of today outside cleaning up messes myself so was not fully aware of the extent of damage in Rolla proper until later in the day. Several reached out to me but mostly through text messages so I wasn't fully aware of the mess.

A1 Tech will be available to help to cleanup this mess and restore normal operations.

Of course in business dealing with scam victims is my #1 job and it sounds like scammers are already masquerading as FEMA and contacting folks in Rolla. DO NOT GIVE THEM ANY INFORMATION OR MONEY! IF you have not contacted anyone about your damages any contact related to the storm damage is likely a scam. Unsolicited contacts of any kind reaching out to you should be viewed with suspicion. If you question them and they become increasingly pushy and telling you you need to act immediately, know it is a scam. These are the true bottom feeders of society and there is a special place in hell for them!

Data recovery is my #2 job. It is one of the most costly and inconvient and definitely my 2nd most common job. Sometimes this requires a clean room service which is quite expensive. It can range from a couple thousand dollars to tens of thousands of dollars depending on the extent of the damage and number of devices impacted. Not all data loss is caused due to scammers and malware. Bad weather is also a common reason for data loss. Computers at your home may have been damaged due to power surges, water, and/or physical shock damage, resulting in data loss.

The information on these devices may be worth more than the device itself. If this is the case, DO NOT ATTEMPT DATA RECOVERY OF DAMAGED DEVICES ON YOUR OWN! THEY NEED TO BE LEFT UNPLUGGED AND OFF with the battery removed if that is possible! Improper data recovery can render recoverable data unrecoverable or make it more difficult and costly.

If you have a reliable cloud backup or secure onsite or offsite backup, data recovery should be much easier. I also mention geographic separation of data backups. One can take a backup to their place of work, family, or friends to make sure all eggs aren't in the same basket. That way if a disaster destroyes the primary location of information, it will be backed up in another location.

Damage due to improper power protection or extreme power conditions is my #3 most common cause of electronic damage. The weather itself is the likely cause of most of this due to lightning induced surges and brownouts.

Generators used during power outages can also result in damage to sensitive electronics. Many traditional construction generators due not produce clean power. These are fine for large motors, pumps, simple power tools, and heating elements but not modern electronics. Inverter generators produce clean power, make less noise, and use less fuel so are ideal for powering electronics, though they are more costly and complex. An inverter or quality home backup generator is best suited to powering electronics, appliances, and HVAC systems during a power outage.

I am going to try to hold Monday open for emergency service to local impacted businesses and residents. Routine maintenance and non-critical services will be delayed to take care of those most impacted be the storm.

PLEASE CALL 573-458-9175 if you need my services. DO NOT use Facebook to contact me if you want a timely response. I get several dozen or more scammers contacting me each and every day on Facebook so this means of communication is very low priority for me. It might be several days or you might get one of my snarky responses intended for the scammers! The platform is a complete cesspool of scammers and sees no need to try to tackle this problem as they profit directly from the paid ads and indirectly from the engagement the scammers generate. Do not send money to anyone through Facebook related to this disaster or otherwise.

So you have a laptop power adapter and the dog eats it. The name brand for your laptop costs $100 but you find a no-name replacement for $9 on Amazon or EBay and go for it. Well, I have had like 4 cases over the last week where the use of these "Happy China" products as I call them have done significant damage to electronics, including the complete loss of a $2600 laptop. A cheap mouse also fried USB ports on a new PC.

Remember that I often say people are "saving themselves poor" by trying to skimp on price at the expense of quality. If you don't know about the quality of a third party replacement part, do not buy it or use it. Remember that a $9 laptop power adapter cost one of my customers $2600. Also remember that many of these cheapo products have fake reviews, giving high ratings to products that either don't work at all or are of very poor quality. Do your research and make sure you are buying a proper replacement or accessory.

Of course! Facebook covers for scammers and censors those who expose the scammers for what they are.

People need to really stop interacting with most of the random content they are fed by Facebook. These days it is just clickbait to drive engagement and lure people into scams. The pretty pictures, quotes, and fake religious pages are all doing real harm. Many are completely fake these days and AI generated. Most of this crap is from overseas but people don't even bother to look at where the pages are from and who is hosting. Again, people need to SLOW DOWN and THINK BEFORE THEY CLICK.

Shrimp Jesus, grandmothers with cakes and suspiciously cozy log cabins have all led to alarm
