If someone tells you a certified ESP makes your company CMMC compliant, ask which controls, specifically, that certification covers — because the honest answer is: some of them, not all of them. The rest, including the System Security Plan, the POA&M, your SPRS score, and the annual affirmation a named officer personally signs, stay with you.

Microsoft keeps Microsoft 365 running. It does not promise to restore the files your team deleted, overwrote, or lost to ransomware last quarter.

That's the shared responsibility model, and it is one of the most misunderstood line items in an SMB IT budget. Microsoft is responsible for the service: uptime, infrastructure, the platform itself. You are responsible for your data: who can delete it, how long it can be recovered, and whether a clean copy exists outside your tenant.

By default, "recovery" usually means a recycle bin and a limited retention window. That covers an accidental delete on Tuesday. It does not cover a departed employee who emptied a mailbox, a sync client that overwrote good files with encrypted ones, or the discovery in month four that a shared folder was damaged in month two.

Three questions to put to your IT team this week:

1. If a SharePoint library were encrypted today, how far back could we restore, and who tested that?
2. Is there a copy of our email, files, and Teams data stored outside our Microsoft 365 tenant?
3. How long does it take to restore one mailbox? One site? Everything?

If any answer is "we think so," that's a finding, not a policy.

Contracting officers are now directed to strip third-party certification requirements out of solicitations outright, not just treat them as paused.
