“Your antivirus found 5 viruses!” …or did it?
⚠️ Have you suddenly started seeing warnings like:
“McAfee: 5 VIRUSES DETECTED!”
“Your Norton subscription has expired!”
“Your computer is infected!”
Especially when they keep popping up on the right-hand side of your screen? There’s a good chance that warning ISN’T coming from Norton or McAfee at all.
One of the scams we’re seeing frequently right now involves malicious websites getting permission to send browser notifications. Once permission is granted, they can spam your computer with very convincing-looking security warnings. The goal? Get you scared enough to click.
🚫 Don’t click the notification.
🚫 Don’t call a phone number it gives you.
🚫 Don’t enter payment information.
If you’re unsure whether a warning is legitimate, give Bit Tech a call. We’d much rather help you check a suspicious message BEFORE you click it. The FTC also warns that legitimate security pop-ups will not tell you to call a phone number for help.
