Computer randomly turning off or suddenly having a lot of internal fan noise? Check the vents on the bottom and sides of the machine for abnormal dust patterns, dirt or debris and make sure the machine has a clear ventilation path. This is especially true for towers placed on the carpet under computer desks or in cabinets, or laptops used frequently on your lap or not given room to ventilate. Keep some canned air handy to periodically blow out the vents on the machine to prevent overheating!

Straight from our local newspaper…this happens everywhere and is so much more common than you think. It’s scary to think about how many people have been swindled out of thousands of dollars simply because they didn’t know better.

Share this info today with someone less tech savvy than yourself:
1. It is a SCAM if someone calls you and says they found a virus on your computer. ☎️
2. If you get a pop-up on your screen that says you’ve been hacked and to call a number DON’T CALL THAT NUMBER. 🦠
3. Be VERY careful when searching for a customer service number online- go straight to the manufacturer’s website (www.dell.com or www.canon.com) and search for “support” on their site. 🔎
4. Giving passwords, social security numbers, or even credit card numbers to “verify your identity” are ALWAYS a SCAM. 🏦
5. NEVER let someone have remote access to your computer unless you or someone you know has met them in person. 👩‍💻

This 2 year old MacBook Air stopped charging for a client the other day, and it turns out the USB-C ports needed to be replaced. Lucky for them, it was an easily replaceable part and we got it back to them within 48 hours- much cheaper AND quicker than the Apple Store. PSA: when you're searching on your computer and this pops up in the browser- don't freak out, and DON'T CALL THAT NUMBER. I have had two clients this week fall victim into calling them, providing passwords, and logins to bank websites to "verify their identity" only to have their money drained out of their account. Please, PLEASE educate the people you know in your life that when this happens to turn the computer off right away and call your trusted computer support staff (we prefer Canyonero Consulting) to get your machine back and running in tip-top shape (minus any spyware and pop-ups).

I get asked a lot "What's the easiest way to scan a document"? I surprise many of my clients when I tell them to use their phone. I recommend Scanner Pro on for the iPhone (https://apps.apple.com/us/app/scanner-pro-scan-pdf-documents/id333710667), or the similar Open Note Scanner on Android (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.todobom.opennotescanner&hl=en_US&gl=US). Both let you take a picture of the document, the app automatically straightens it and removes background clutter and turns it into a professional looking black/white .pdf document you can email, txt, or save it to GoogleDocs, OneDrive or Dropbox. No need to pay for advanced features...the basic is free and simple to use. Set it up and try it today to make sure you're ready for the next time you need to use it!

When was the last time you cleaned your keyboard and mouse? If you don't know- it's time- they're one of the dirtiest places in the house! Get a Lysol Wipe, squeeze out excess moisture, and then wipe your keyboard. Get a new wipe and do the same for your mouse, and your desk phone. Alcohol (90%) is ok to use, but may damage some finishes over time. Avoid disinfectant sprays as they saturate too much liquid, or products which contain bleach. Happy disinfecting!

FYI- having phone issues lately? This might be why! Verizon has been having lots of issues over the last few weeks as they have been preparing for 5G additions to our 4G towers. Try turning off VoLTE/4G and default to 3G towers, and you should see more reliable service and data. This has been an issue for about a month or so...and could take another month or so....

Did you call someone over the last few days only to hear that their Verizon Voicemail was full (or they told you yours was mysteriously full?) It was actually a glitch in their system, and should be resolved by now....if not, call *611 and have them refresh your voicemail account!
