Recent customer interaction gave me an easier way to explain some of my business model for both businesses and regular customers.
She runs a small company that utilizes remote desktop software to connect to clients. To centralize this and shift from personal to compliant machines she reached out to me about "cloud computing", in this instance DaaS.
In the past she was charged by a company to just create the icon, the thing she clicks on to connect to remote computers. $15 each time until she realized she could copy and paste them!
This company was trying to nickel and dime her for every little thing because she didn't know any better.
While in discussion she had an issue with her wifi and because I was moving I didn't have the opportunity to fix it for her. She reached out to somebody local in her neighborhood that has their own repair business. This guy kept her laptop for about a week and did not fix it, instead trying to upsell her on a refurbished laptop that was actually OLDER than the one she had.
She finally brought it to me, and I had it square in less than 5 minutes. On top of that, I backed up her data because she mentioned everything was on there that she needed.
Per our discussion about the remote stuff, I had the infrastructure setup within 2 days to test for her business model. I was even going to front the licensing cost for the gateway software if we decided to move forward so she only pays the standard monthly cost. This is how it should be done. If you go to Walmart to buy groceries they don't tell you to pay for the store first, then the groceries, then pay each cachier each time you use them to checkout just to use their service.
This type of nickel and diming is extortion of the computer ignorant folks. It's one thing for one business to base their pricing model high to a large business because they can afford to hire people to tell them that's a bad idea. I.T. Consultation is a thing, but end users and small businesses, I'm against that 100%. Best Buy does it too any time you go to Geek Squad.
If you're in the market for DaaS (desktop as a service), VPS (virtual private server), or managed services just hit the website to contact me.
