🔙 Throwback Thursday: What if digital transformation isn't about replacing everything?
In 2022, we brought together leaders from Pacific Life and CeramTec to talk about their digital transformation journeys and how they used Appian to rethink the way their businesses work.
While their organizations and starting points were very different, they discovered some important lessons along the way:
• Start with the business problem, not the technology. Pacific Life began with a specific business need and gradually expanded its use of Appian as new opportunities emerged.
• Don't automate a broken process. CeramTec used its transformation as an opportunity to examine existing workflows, eliminate unnecessary steps and build more efficient processes rather than simply recreating the old system.
• You don't have to replace everything. CeramTec kept Excel where it provided value, while using Appian to manage the workflow and move information between teams.
• Put business users at the center. Both organizations emphasized the importance of involving users throughout development. Their input helped shape the solutions while creating greater ownership and adoption.
• Agile is about learning, not just ceremonies. Iterative development gave both organizations the flexibility to adapt, prioritize what mattered most and improve processes as they learned.
• Transformation can become a foundation for what's next. What began as targeted initiatives evolved into broader platforms supporting additional applications, teams and business processes.
Perhaps the biggest takeaway? Digital transformation doesn't have to mean starting over. The most successful transformations often come from understanding what works, identifying what doesn't and creating a more flexible way forward.
