New DC Systems Analysis & Arc Flash 3-Day Class! October 29-31, 2018 in Pittsburgh, PA

Dan Doan, P.E. joins SKM as an instructor in this class! Learn from the expert that developed the DC Arc Flash equations that is used in the SKM software and adopted in the industry! Feel free to bring your own questions!

This course has been redeveloped to include additional materials including photovoltaic systems and new DC Arc Flash methods based on Dan Doan's IEEE paper and NFPA 70E 2018. This course is geared towards electrical power engineers responsible for the design and analysis of DC systems as well as managers responsible for reviewing and approving studies.

Discussions include an overview on commonly used DC equipment and the application of the Power*Tools program to analyze example DC electrical distribution systems. Battery sizing, load-flow, short-circuit, protection, and DC arc flash studies will be reviewed and then performed using the software.

Objectives:
Review of DC equipment (Batteries, PV, Rectifiers, Inverters, and Loads)
DC Short Circuit calculations
DC Protection overview
Review of DC Arc Flash methods (Method to use based on application & limitations)
Provide practical DC system examples from typical industrial and commercial power systems with explanations of why the study results are presented.
Discuss issues, examine study results and potential problem areas.
Discuss considerations when selecting equipment, along with explaining equipment datasheets.
Provide relevant information needed to successfully complete a DC Systems study.

This course will be instructed by experts Daniel Doan and Ruperto Sanchez with a combined 55 years of power systems experience.

Daniel R. Doan was the Principal Consultant for DuPont in Wilmington, Delaware for 35 years. Dan received his BSEE and MSEE degrees from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). He has co-authored IEEE papers at IAS/PCIC and Pulp&Paper on subjects ranging from electrical safety to electrical system reliability and operations. He has co-authored PCIC Tutorials on Electrical System Reliability and Arc Flash Hazard Analysis, and has participated in many IAS Electrical Safety Workshops as author and presenter. Dan is an IEEE Fellow, Secretary of the IEEE IAS Electrical Safety Committee, a member of the IEEE 1584 ‘Guide for Performing Arc-Flash Hazard Calculations’ Working Group, and is a registered Professional Engineer in Pennsylvania.

Ruperto G. Sanchez is a Senior Engineer for SKM Systems Analysis, Inc. where he provides technical support for all the SKM Power*Tools products. He has instructed thousands of engineers on the SKM Power*Tools software worldwide and assists Project Engineers with short circuit, load flow, motor starting, arc flash hazard analysis and other power system studies. Ruperto received his BSEE with emphasis in Power Systems from California State Polytechnic University, Pomona. Ruperto has 20 years of experience in the application of engineering computer software and is a member of the IEEE.
